Yeah, idk when waiters/waitresses became so sacrosanct. Feel free to tip 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%... idgaf. I'll continue to tip what I view an appropriate amount (~20%) if my service is passable.
But the "if you can't afford to tip 20%, don't go out" bit is moronic. Guess consumers are supposed to just get bent on both ends so relatively talent-less service industry folk can make $25-30/hour with chunks of it tax-free.
I valeted cars in college at a fast-paced hotel where we spent the entire shift sprinting up and down ramps. I made good money for something that is similarly difficult to waitstaff. For everyone that tipped $0, someone tipped too much. I didn't throw a conniption fit for every tip too small. If you aren't making what you think you're worth, you're welcome to quit.

As someone who has a side hustle where I don't depend on tips, but they're very-much appreciated, I completely understand tip fatigue where you're constantly asked to tip.
I will never tip (unless I'm on a date) at a coffee shop and will very, very rarely tip on take out (I only tip every once in a while at a favorite place).
However, as another poster said, if I'm being served and/or given exceptional service, I will definitely still tip the same amount as before. Things have gotten so expensive nowadays and I don't mind continuing to give my servers 15ish percent or give the rideshare driver $1-$5 (of course, provided the Uber ride was worth it).
I'm also the guy who has no issue just clicking "No Tip" when the Starbucks employee or whoever turns the screen.

With servers paying no taxes on tips, I’ll be lowering what I tip to about 10%
This is a stupid take. You are going to penalize people who serve your arse who make nothing to begin with so they might get a couple bucks from the IRS lol. You think people waiting on you are rolling in cash?
I work at a local pub for fun (retired and I get to drink beer on the job) and I make $11 an hour base. On a good day I might bring home $20/hr with tips to work my arse off giving people a nice night out.
I typically give all my cash tips to the younger people working there who are barely scraping by. I always tip 20% anywhere I go out unless I get extremely poor service. This board constantly complains about bad service. You get what you pay for.

Yes. They asked for this shite, live with the consequences

No. But I no longer feel guilted for not leaving a tip at places like Smoothie king, Crumble, or anywhere I stand at a counter to order and take food to leave

If the government made it so I didn’t have to pay taxes on my income, I’d tip more. But if one group doesn’t have to pay taxes and I do, why should they get more of my money?

If paid tips were an itemized deduction, we'd all be in busiess.

If an employee gives bad service because they weren't tipped to their liking, they dont deserve to be employed.

Its not MY pub, its a pub that you are going to for a beer and brat. I'm not sure what your job has to do with me getting to work lol

Servers not paying taxes on cash tips has been the norm forever. I tip the same, with cash, every place I patronize regularly. It helps me get badass service.
I remember driving my shitty Lumina to the Westin Hotel in North Dallas. I treated the valets well, so they left it out front (instead of taking it to the garage) along with the high rollers' Mercedes, Ferraris, and Jags. It was comical when I came out to get the Lumina.

And he has no issues paying for that beer and brat. He's even nice enough to give you a little something on the side for doing the job your employer pays you to do.

Is the minimum wage for wait staff still $2.xx per hour?
I'm still tipping generously under the impression that it is, so the tax status will not affect what I do.
Knowing that a waiter/waitress makes (?)$7.25 per hour like every other minimum wage employee might change how I tip, but that's a decision I'll make down the line.

Im pretty easygoing about it...
If you're making me a drink, coffee or a real drink, I dont mind tipping.
But there's a chicken place in Covington, Red Bird?, where you walk up to self-order screen, order your food, go to the next counter and pay, they hand you a cup, and the screen asks for a tip.
That takes balls.
And the food sucks.

OP just looking for a reason to stiff his servers bc he’s a cheapskate
Posted on 7/8/25 at 7:08 pm to Mingo Was His NameO
If you actually read the bill you would know that it only applies to cash tips. You know, the ones they weren’t claiming anyway. But go ahead and be a piece of shite if that’s your prerogative.

For a server waiting on me, no.
The crap where I order at the counter, then have to grab my food from the counter when they call my name or number, I’m not tipping in the first place. Raise your prices if you must to cover the cashier and cooking staff for non-table service food.
