I remember he also got pissed about the game Guitar Hero using the song for the final boss because you could lose to the devil and he didn't like that.
When Mark O'Connor started working on the song The Devil Comes Back to Georgia (mentioned above) he had the idea for the Devil to win the fiddle back. He wrote Charlie a letter outlining the plot and asking for Charlie's permission to record it, and also ask Charlie to play on it. After a few weeks of not hearing back he wrote him again. Another few weeks go by without an answer, he tries again. He finally gets a letter back from Charlie. The letter is four words long - "The devil can't win."

I’ve wondered what happened to Johnny after this encounter. How did the rest of his life play out? What happened when he died & showed up @ the pearly gates?
There’s a sequel with Mark O’Connor, Johnny Cash and Charlie Daniels. The original is of course much much better

The Devil was more modern rock music-- astringent and punchy, solidly in the minor mode, whereas Johnny played what sounded like a traditional bluegrass tune. So yea, Devil 1, Johnny zip.

It blows me away that anyone could possibly think this. It was a fiddle battle. Johnny wiped the floor with him. This isn't an issue upon which reasonable minds can differ.

Ray Wylie Hubbard discusses this with the devil (~3:45)

No but the devil had a better band. They had some groove
The Devil’s bassist was working that thumper like a lead guitar. Some real Geddy Lee-type shite.

Johnny clearly won. even the devil knew that he'd been beat.

The devil bowed down because he knew that he'd been beat.
And you stepped up unwanted and proud to suck his meat.

The mistake the devil made was forgetting it was a fiddle contest. He went full crunchy baseline. Or…..the demon bass player went rogue.

Ray Wylie Hubbard (conversation w the devil)- did
Well it looked like I was gonna be stuck here (Hell), as far as I could tell
I thought I might as well suck up; you know, what the hell?
I said, "You know that song that Charlie Daniels did?
"About how you went down to Georgia and played fiddle against that kid?"
He said, "Yeah, it broke my heart but, you know, what're you gonna do?"
I said, "To tell you the truth, I thought your solo was the better of the two"
or maybe he was just a kiss-arse

Anyone else think that the Devil was better than Johnny on the fiddle?
Nope. The devil's solo is flashy but fairly simplistic sliding tricks. The backup band is what makes it really shine. Johnny had no band accompaniment and his solo was far more technically skilled and difficult, as well as taking some of what the devil did and expanding it. Such a great song.
