Flown in two 4 seater helicopters over the Grand Canyon twice. 1st time was fine. 2nd time the wind picked up and I white knuckled it until we could land safely. I for sure thought that time was the end.

Not really concerned. I will still do it within reason.

The only flight I ever took that I probably wouldn't do these days was when I flew in a tiny arse plane up in Alaska up to the base camp on Mt. Mckinley. We were going in between mountains and this little plane was getting blown all around from what it felt like.

Most of it depends on how how well the aircraft is maintained and how competent the pilot is. I would fly anywhere in anything with my dad. There are several local private pilots who I would never fly with.

i drive mt roads.
Snow, black ice and trucks over the 39 ft limit taking out innocent people on curves.
This past week several cars were stuck on the most direct route to civilization in knee deep snow because no chains.
Friend was stuck in all that even though had chains, for an hour before snow plow came.
I laugh at my housemate.
She went up there because gps said to. Hail. Snow. A truck went over.

As opposed to larger aircraft? They can crash just as well.

have you seen the random tire videos on the interwebs? Dude will just be walking minding his own business and then, BOOM, tire out of nowhere and the guy dies.

When its your time, its your time.

Live life to the fullest, give love to those closest to you unconditionally, know that good deeds wont get you into heaven (according to scripture), dont shy away from God's light, and enjoy the ride while you still can.

This is true to a certain extent , but risk taking increases your chance of death, that's just a fact.

That's how I feel about it.

Consider if most private airplanes are maintained like most private cars.

It's probably not "most," but what is that qualifier? Many? Some?

That is true for commercial airlines but it is not so true for private planes--particularly helicopters.

Helicopters are much more dangerous

quote:

Still, it’s possible to do a little speculation with the data that are available. Between 2005 and 2009, there was an annual average of 1.44 fatalities (PDF) per 100,000 flying hours in nonmilitary helicopters. Over the same period, there were 13.2 traffic fatalities per 100,000 population in the United States annually. Since the average American spends around 780 hours per year (PDF) in the car, that means the fatality rate per 100,000 hours of driving time is just 0.017. Based on hours alone, helicopters are 85 times more dangerous than driving.

Between Carley McCord and now this, you couldn’t pay me any amount of money to fly on those fricking things

Might as well give up cars and trucks, too. Ride motorcycles or bicycles? Give those up, too. Gotta be safe, you know.

I say this all the time. I have hundreds of hours in military and government helos. NO WAY I would fly in a commercial helicopter. I saw the amount of maintenance and care the governments birds got (unlimited budget) and I know the civilian craft aren’t getting that.

Side note: one of my close buddies is a Blackhawk pilot and I flew with him a couple of times. He would always come on the intercom at take off and say :

Just remember everyone, this craft has 4,000 parts and only 3900 of them are critical to staying in the air. I am sure it will be fine.

Now I feel there were other options for helicopter travel I sure would use it. I'll never understand why a guy like Kobe had one if he wasn't flying t himself. Particularly for short distances.

I will still get on a small plane. I used to want to get a private license but I realized I would never fly enough to remain safe as a pilot.

In the last 20 years I know one person that died in an automobile accident and three that died in three different small aircraft crashes--one was in a helicopter.

It is little bit shocking how little experience some private pilots have and those skills and procedures necessary to be a safe pilot are things one needs to practice and to use. I know three guys that got their private licenses, got bored and laid off of flying for some time and then got back in a plane to fly and realized they should not be flying. None of them have current licenses now.
