I read that he traveled by helicopter all of the time and was known for doing that.

The debate isnt car vs private jet

It’s private jet vs commercial airline. And it’s pretty hard for you to dispute that a commercial airline is safer, but go ahead and try if you want

When I used to fly in helos offshore several years ago, I never felt as vulnerable to fate as when I was the only passenger. I knew it was my time to go if something happened healthwise to the pilot. Thank god for microwave and satellite infrastructure and high-speed wide-area networking.

I have always had a fear of helicopters even while in the Army and rappelling from one. Will never get in another one.

If you're going back to the 40's for automobile accidents do the same for aircraft.

Btw-I see you added Earnhardt to your list to make it as big as possible. Comical.

Just a few years ago a critically injured car wreck victim was being choppered to the hospital via Acadian Ambulance and the helicopter crashed, killing the patient. Talk about not your day.

Yes, that's exactly why I added him. It made me laugh to include him in car wrecks, you dolt. I thought about doing a list of nothing but race drivers.

I did a helicopter tour of Kauai in 2005 with my wife. I hated it because it was a windy that day and it was not a smooth ride. Got sick as crap and felt like I needed to vomit for 40 minutes. Got off and said once was enough. When we were there in 2017 with our kids,( the 1st time we took the kids now that they were old enough to enjoy) my wife wanted us to do it again. I said heck no, not feeling that so I took my youngest (8 at the time) daughter to do a horseback ride while my wife and 3 older kids did the 1 hour copter tour. They went with Safari Tours. Safari is the charter that went down several weeks back while exiting Waimea Canyon, killing all 7 on board. Now my wife doesn’t ever want to do that again.

You’re far more in danger on a Louisiana interstate but ok

Is it more dangerous than a chopper or small craft?

Commercial air travel is obviously safer.

I say this all the time. I have hundreds of hours in military and government helos. NO WAY I would fly in a commercial helicopter. I saw the amount of maintenance and care the governments birds got (unlimited budget) and I know the civilian craft aren’t getting that.

On the bigger military planes, don't the crew chiefs fly on the plane. That would certainly be a big incentive to have the plane properly maintained.

In the 50's, Dad flew Skyraiders out a Miami (USMC special weapons - nukes - squadron). He fired on up and said "this doesn't sound right" so he took a different plane up. The mechanics looked over the funny sounding one and found no issues.

Another pilot took the plane out and had some mechanical issue that caused the plane to crash over the ocean.

And I am about to start a new position as a Regional BDM and will frequently be flying in a Cirrus SR22. The CEO owns the plane and is the pilot and he assures me that it is nothing to worry about. We will be flying regionally in that plane twice a month on average and , quite frankly, I am a little anxious about it. He said that it has a parachute. I told him that I would like him to teach me how to fly it as much as possible but mainly just show me where the parachute lever is located and how to engage it in case he strokes out in mid flight.

You fly helos in places like LA to avoid the traffic. It can take hours to go a couple of miles at times. We complain about traffic on the bridge but it isn’t the same thing.
