Maybe a stupid question, do I just call my normal homeowners agent and add it on or what?

I called my insurance broker and they handle it. I don't think it's an add on to your existing but rather a completely separate policy that's backed by FEMA in some way.

You are not alone. Half my neighborhood didn't have flood insurance because it wasn't in the flood zone and "it never floods".

This is unprecedented shite.

Don't worry pretty soon all the BR metro area will be required to have flood insurance whether you flooded or not.

Will take a couple of years but 100 year flood maps are about to change big time. Nevermind this was greater than a 100 year flood.

Somebody has to pay for all this damage.

My flood insurance renewal premium is due Sept 7 from Wright National Flood Insurance. My homeowner's agent referred me to them. There is a $1250 deductible each for the building and contents.

The premium is $675 but that is a mistake because they added a $250 surcharge for non-primary residence. Should be $25 surcharge for me. Guess who I'll be calling tomorrow?

Good for you for letting us know how smart you are. You aren't an idiot that's for sure, but you sound like a very small man.

I'm not gonna lie, I called and got it today. I know we survived the 500 year flood, but I don't want to ever have to worry about that again.

Also, I'm assuming the rates will go up soon so I wanted to get it done now.

We were not required to have it, and our 'hood has never flooded in the 40 years it's been here.

I watched on the news in the 90s when folks in Missouri got flooded with a 500 year flood (0.2 percent chance of occurring) and lost everything.

I bought flood insurance. It costs about $400 a year and gives me peace of mind, especially with the crazy weather we've had in recent years.

It's all through the NFIP (national flood insurance program) and administered by FEMA. Your insurance agent can def provide you coverage. If not, look for another agent.

Thanks!

All flood insurance is through the NFIP, unless it is surplus, as the NFIP only covers $250,000.

There are carriers (wright national, centauri, national general, etc) that over "excess" flood, and the commissions for us agents are $$$$.
