Only time I've ever noticed this was at that last gas station right before you get on the Causeway headed north. Those pumps were wildly optimistic about how much gas you were getting. Used to be called the "Ritz 24" and the prices were ritzy indeed.

At other places, the pump seems to click off right around where I was thinking it would.

Are you saying that the pumps are telling you that you’re pumping more gas than you actually are? Pretty sure that’s illegal.

Last several fillups, I seem to be somehow squeezing an extra gallon or two into my tank. I'm pretty sure it's filling more than my tank supposedly holds. Also, when I press YES for receipt, there's never paper for a receipt. So it makes all the "working" sounds and gives me nothing (kinda like my women).

Jesus, you’re stupid.

Sounds like your foil hat has come loose.

Highly illegal. Like you're about to lose your gas station if you get caught kind of illegal.

What will happen if you keep over filling?

That's the thing... it's the first kick off.

Maybe I was just more responsible in the past and living life more on the edge as I get older. Wooooooo

You don’t get receipts so you have to go inside where they hope you buy something. I’ve quit several gas stations over this ”trick”. Yes, it’s petty but if I pay at the pump it’s because I don’t want to go in and leave smelling like curry.

At least you don’t have to get gas very often with how fast you drive.

Gas gets pushed into the EVAP system, causing plugged charcoal canisters. Probably the most common cause of check engine lights. If left unfixed, your gas tank will collapse as gas is sucked out while you drive.

Drive faster and you won’t have to fill up so much.

Go to the farthest pump from the door
Less people use this pump and they seem to always print your receipt.
I always check the price/gallon vs the first gallon pumped price.
Never found an error, just something I do.

This answer may sound nerdy but there may be scientific reason why this happens.

Gas is sold by volume. So when you are pumping it from the ground in storage tanks where it is cooler than air temperature and contracts. Once the gas is pumped up to the surface the gas expands as it warms. Some gas stations may add heaters to make sure the gas is delivered at a standard temperature.

Fuel tanks are rated for x gallons at certain temperatures. If it is warmer you can probably fit an extra gallon or 2 depending on the size of your tank.

The inverse is true for colder months. You will probably fill up less gas than normal because gasoline will expand in cold weather.
