Not if they live in a subdivision with an HOA.

Are you suggesting that private property is immune to laws, covenants and regulations? It doesn’t matter what you think you can do with your property, there can and always will be limitations.

So if I buy a house next door to you (say 200 feet from you) and use it for nuclear waste storage I should be well within my rights to do so?

I think HOAs serve a good purpose an I understand the need…with that said, I will do my damndest to never live in a neighborhood with one again.
My story:
Got a notice that one of bushes in the front was over grown…wife never liked the bush, so I had it removed…HOA then gave us a notice the fence it was in front of needed repair…removed all the slats, but left the poles up, matched the type of wood and the stain to the original fence and kept the exact same dimensions as existing fence…got another notice that the dimensions were wrong, when I questioned them, they said the rules had changed since that fence was built…
I was in the process of moving so I fixed the fence in the cheapest manner possible and then was told that my garbage cans could now be seen from the street that my fence didn’t adequately cover them…the picture that was provided was 5 houses down…that is where you can see them…
Started putting my garbage cans in the garage…
None of that bullshite made the property values better…that was just a lot of abuse of power and since you have very little recourse if these HOAs are unreasonable, I will just not sign on to one again.

I’m pretty sure local and state governments have laws about nuclear waste storage.

But keep trying with your comparisons champ, I’m sure you’ll come up with a decent one eventually.

Louisiana is full of neighborhoods with cars parked in front yards, trash and shite strewn all over the place, and every financed toy proudly displayed in the driveway. No thanks

Did you just drive through my neighborhood before posting this?

In our case we were provided a copy of the bylaws/convents when house shopping but weren't asked to sign anything at closing. As first time homebuyers we thought nothing of it until we later learned that the HOA was never actually formed, and the bylaws document we were shown was practically garbage. I thought "oh cool, frick a HOA" but that sentiment was short lived. None of the below issues were really prevalent when house shopping but in hindsight, I wished we'd have purchased elsewhere.

Not long after moving in the guy directly across the street bought a mid-90s project Mustang. Since he didn't have room in his garage since his $40,000 giant lifted ATV was in there he parked it on his front lawn. It sat there for nearly a year on flat tires until he traded it for a non-running Jeep, which promptly took the Mustang's spot on the lawn. They eventually moved out and took all their junk cars with them.

A few houses down is a house that's rented, but the owners are pieces of shite who rent to the first assholes who will sign a lease. Their first tenant was no doubt selling drugs, throwing massive parties, but they refused to do shite because the lease was in the grandmama's name, who didn't even live there. After enough complaints, calls to the cops, they agreed not to renew their lease after a swat team showed up at 3am to arrest the guy who lived there. They trashed the place before moving out. They then leased it out to a dude who does construction work, who will regularly have trucks/trailer/etc parked on the front lawn. On days he doesn't need his excavator he simply unloads it off his trailer and leaves it parked on the lawn for days. He recently showed up with a school bus for frick knows why and parked it across the yard. Nearly 20 neighbors reached out to the homeowner and got ZERO response/help, finally someone pulled some strings at the city and the tenant was told to move it or have it towed/be cited and it disappeared but the construction trailers soon took its place.

Yea this isn't some hood of $500k+ estates but is still a subdivision of $250k custom homes in Lafayette. They built a DR Horton copycat neighborhood next door and that place is better kept most times than ours.

Stuff like this is negatively affecting home values as well as the gap in $/sqft inches ever so closer to the neighboring DR Horton hood.

Our next house will be on 50+ acres.

TLDR: You'll hate HOAs until you need HOAs.

You say this, but you’d be the first one bitching on here if your next door neighbor painted his house some shitty color, let their grass grow for weeks without cutting it, and had a car on blocks in their driveway.

Try to sell your nice home with that next door.

Dumbass.

I think the point is that just because you own something, it doesnt give anyone the right to do whatever they ant in any circumstance. It's more like apples to monkey wrenches but I agree with the basic sentiment.

The ownership of something does not supercede laws, covenants, etc.

I am VP of our HOA and I don't play! Everyone receives a copy of covenants when they move in, and wanna pretend they don't know what time it is when we move to put a lien on their home. People need to grow up.

Damn, your situation sounds like a nightmare.

We live in an older neighborhood in Lafayette with no HOA, but thankfully all of my neighbors on my street are good people who take care of their homes and yards thankfully.

HOA’s can be a royal pain in the arse, but they do serve their purpose of keeping home values up by forcing people to do proper upkeep on their homes.

Lol I easily could. Didn’t realize a bunch of y’all have a hard on for your HOA.

If you like having one cool, from my experience they’re just a money maker.

Ummmm...you're the one who started replying to rebuttals on JBirds comments. Is he retarded, maybe.?.? But arguing with people rebutting his ridiculous comments doesnt mean people think you're arguing for anarchy, it means his comments were incorrect.

Knighting for them doesnt do much to help your cause.

Some of the comments you've picked out were direct responses to his comments not insinuations at anything else.

Yeah because comparing private property to public roads is dumb.

I didn't "knight" for his comments. I called out a dumb comparison.
