Anyone else a little surprised we still have side mirrors on cars?

Sure the expense but think of the aero advantage. I am thinking of a camera / projection system that would show the rear view on the inside of the door windows (like an HUD).

My Silverado truck has the bigger mirrors optimized for towing.
Looks like dumbo ears.

No, people are used to using them.

So you would have turn your head a full 90 degrees to look at it? You would not be looking at the road at all.

I see no reason to make something so elaborate out of something so simple.

Wouldn't be surprised if this is an international flavor of an urban legend, but I heard many years ago that pilots of a model of US fighter jet reported problems seeing over their shoulders or any rearward angles. So the US gov't was investigating high tech and expensive (at the time) rear view camera systems for that fighter. Then they found out that the Israelis had mounted side-mirrors from cars onto the same fighters that they bought from us.

Why spend more money on something that has the same effect for way cheaper?

They are just now being used on prototype racing cars and high end supercars. I don't think that tech will trickle down for another 10-20 years

I wonder why cars still have cigarette lighter port, yet no cigarette lighter.

I wish we didn't. Side mirror is the reason I got pulled over and subsequently got my first dwi

the F-35 has tiny cameras all over it that are sort of blue-toothed into the pilot's helmet so that anywhere he looks, including straight down, he can view via the camera

What are your studies on this?
I need concrete data

I heard the int'l urban legend probably 25 - 30 years ago.

Quite a few newer cars have cameras on the right side mirror. When you use your right blinker, it displays the video feed on the console screen.

It is Fricking Amazing
They also do not seem to know how to merger onto the Interstate, I don't care what state you are in

I've often wondered the same.
I think the wind resistance is fairly minimal for a consumer, but it is there. In no way would offset the cost though. But in the age of hypermiling and aerodynamics, it's an avenue to explore.
I recall doing an example calculation in college on how much the raised emblem (think older jaguars) on the front of a car costs due to aerodynamics. Don't recall the value (on order of $10/year), but at least it was a thought to manufacturers.

they have rear mirrors on fighters, but they're not exterior mounted, there used to be all kinds of ad libbing, about the same time you heard that, there were guys carrying around fuzz busters in F-16s at Red Flag to pick up radar interrogations from their adversaries
