frick, most auto makers can't make power mirrors that last more than 10 years.

How long do you think these camera systems would last?

Why the frick do I have a backup camera on my truck but I can't turn it on whenever I want to see my blind spots? I've never understood that

Cameras still wouldn't help with people who don't understand the concept that cars can approach them from behind and they need to GTFO of the way.

So you're confused as to why a back up camera only functions when you are backing up?

Side mirrors with a convex mirror are the best safety features you can have on a car. Do most people know how to use side mirrors? Well, probably half of the people on the road are women, so right there you have eliminated half the driving population from being able to use them. Let's just say the numbers aren't good.

My wife's Honda has a fish eye camera built into the right side mirror that feeds video to the center console screen when she turns on the right blinker. The screen gives you a much better idea of whats on your side than the mirror and checking your blind spots. Works fine and should last the length of time we keep the car.

Left side is still mirror and blind spot checking because looking right at the console isn't a good idea.

I'll go out on a pretty sturdy limb and say the vast majority have their side mirrors set incorrectly.

I don't think that tech will trickle down for another 10-20 years
people won't be driving cars, so the tech won't be necessary.

Yes. The camera is already there. Why can't I use it?

This, if you can use them for backing up they are set incorrectly, they are "sideview" mirrors, when set correctly there will be no blind spot on the vast majority of cars.

yep and if you can see the side of your car in them, then you don't know how to set them.

FYI

Many vehicle have had both rear view and sideview cameras that display those camera views on the main console/dash screens since 2010 at least.

These options are especially prevalent in SUVs and Vans .

Dude, there are still (quite sizable) side mirrors on F1 cars, let alone all the other forms of racing below it that aren't as dependent on aero.

Who gives a shite about the piddly aero cost side mirrors cost on our road cars?

Do you have a back up camera, and still look in your rear view mirror? There are angles that a camera just can't see, due to it being a fixed location.

Some new cars have camera systems that you would think it's a satellite video feed. You can see the car and 360 degrees perfectly around it from above looking straight down, it's a trip. The problem is you can't leave the camera system on. It turns off a few seconds after putting the car in drive.
