Do you have a back up camera, and still look in your rear view mirror? There are angles that a camera just can't see, due to it being a fixed location.

Modern airliners still have side mirrors.

ETA: DC-9 has a pop up mirror on the glare shield to be able to see the whiskey compass which is located on the bulkhead behind the first officer's seat

nowadays they are pushed back by a tug, years ago when we used to power back off the gates we had a guide man and wing walkers to help
