I have a flip out dvd player that died. Looking to replace it with anything.

Stock head unit in my 05 Tahoe finally died last year. I bought a Pioneer Head unit from a local shop and decided to do the install myself. I have a lot of experience at at installing them. Or I did

It was a nightmare. My old unit was basic. AM/FM/CD. I put one in with a touch screen and DVD player with bluetooth. I had to buy some special modules so the controls on my steering wheel would still be able to work with the new head unit and a special adapter module so it could connect to my stock bose amp that was in my Tahoe

It just took way longer than I thought and cost a lot more than I was expecting. I think the unit was around $600 or so and it added up to $750 or so after all the extra stuff

Sounds great. I have a bunch of DVD's of concerts that I play. Had to put the cheater switch in there so the DVD would work while I was driving but I like live music and the visual gives me something to watch.

If I had to do it again, Id probably take it to a shop an let them do it.

Replaced it in my 05 4Runner a year or so ago. It’s more time consuming than anything, but it was pretty easy to do. Just watch a couple of YouTubes before you do it to get an idea on the process, and order from Crutchfield. They’ll know which harnesses and adapters you’ll need, and send step by step instructions on your specific make and model car.

Their sheet said it’d take me 2-3 hours, but it ended up taking closer to 5 or 6. But I took my time and ran into a couple of roadblocks along the way.

A week ago, I was in this camp. Now that I know that I can upgrade my whole system with a 7” touchscreen & Apple play while saving several hundred dollars; I changed my mind.

I don't think they're necessarily trashy, if they're well-done. I bought a new car once that had a stereo that was utter shite.

I was able to upgrade that car with a dealer-option subwoofer, but if that hadn't been available I would have had no choice but to go aftermarket.

Based on the lack of info/effort in the OP you'd probably be best suited going to Best Buy or Mike's and let them tell you what to buy and do the install.

Brings back memories of wiring up my buddy’s 1989 Nissan pickup with Bazooka speakers so big we had to slide the seats forward. Made the mistake of cranking it up then closing the doors. Had fluid running out my ears the next day and still have hearing loss in my left ear.

IIRC, Bazooka / SAS was/is a Baton Rouge company. Anyone have any stories from their heyday back in the late 80s early 90s? I assume they’re still around—those bass tubes they had patented were the bomb in young FCP’s childhood.

I recently replaced the stereo in my Tundra. Factory stereo was FM/XM/CD. Spent $350 and now have touch screen, bluetooth, Apple car play/android auto, back up camera, USB, XM .......

I did the same thing with my 04 Tundra, but omitted the XM hookup. Added a backup camera too. With the CarPlay and a local HD station that plays nothing but 60s-80s music with no commercials, I just didn't need XM.

Crutchfield is great for finding out what you need and what will work in your vehicle. Their prices are pretty good too, but on some components you can do better if you look. I used my regular mechanic for the installation, because I wanted it done a specific way. It's like having a new truck.

For today's cars are royal pain in the arse. Nothing fits or matches. I'm looking at replacing the one in my wife's Camry. fricking aweful.

I get it, I'm replacing the one in my Wrangler since it doesn't have bluetooth or a backup camera. It's gonna suck.
