I raced in Knoxville. I had an '82 Supergoose that I freakin loved. I had a friend who raced for Team GT and another who raced for Redline. I remember when they started making Vectors in Knoxville and you used to see Vector bars everywhere.

I raced at capital and Shipleys back then. Several years later I took over running the brec track on Perkins and got us sanctioned and our first National in a decade or so. I also managed a team for the bicycle source briefly and then recruited and managed a great team for capital. Worked a few nights a week at the track doing maintenance, rider clinics and announcing races on Saturday nights,

I raced a little cruiser class then but I spent a lot more time either digging trails or riding them. Nobody dirt jumps here anymore since the park was built.

Sold my last bike about a year ago at 40 after adding another major injury. I got older and started looking at lines and imagining what might go wrong instead of just committing. My last injury I broke my knee cap into 3 separate pieces because I went half hearted at something riding street.

I still miss it. I passed on a couple good industry jobs when I was young because I didn't want to move my family out to California.

SE Racing is now making 26" versions of the "PK RIPPER" and the quadangle, beautiful well specked out bikes. I'm gonna drop the $800 pretty soon and just pedal around. that'll wrap up BMX for me.

Hmm... I was a kid so I'm not sure but I thought it was out towards central. That track ate my lunch every time, I always had much better days at capital.

The really cool thing about Shipleys wasn't the track it was the trails and jumps in the woods behind the track. Really hilly, smooth and almost too fast. They kept that spot on the DL like any good trails to keep inexperienced kids from showing up and getting hurt/getting the trails plowed.

I saw that. Looks like they are also making 29ers as well.

It's funny how a childhood memory can be limited but so vivid. I remember seeing a bike race going on a track through some trees. Not sure if we were riding up to the track or I was playing in woods nearby. I always wondered about that memory but never asked anyone about it. I'm having an 'a ha' moment today. Thanks y'all.

being youngest kid there are a few of these memories around ball parks, etc in BR area.

I used to race at the old track in Gonzales off airline in the late 90's, we actually had a crew of us from our neighborhood that did it...we made dirt tracks in the cane fields behind the house at times too. I had a mongoose supergoose aluminum frame from a bmx place in Metairie (can't remember the name). They asked me to race for them after I told them I beat a guy there that they were currently sponsoring but never took them up on it. I remember getting the old BMX magazine and looking up our names in it to see how many points we had. I remember 3-piece cranks being the craze at the time. Lots of nostalgia in here. Anyone in here ever made a bike swing? We'd hang a strap from a tree and connect it to an old bike tire.

I too remember going to Shipley's as a kid, but was too young to remember exactly where it was. Anybody know, I'd like to look it up on some old aerial images.

Same here. I just remembered we would always eat at the Wendy's on Sherwood on the way home. Someone mentioned Greenwell Springs Rd. Google Earth image of the area would be awesome.

Been pondering a 26“ cruiser for a while now. Kid's dad in my neighborhood growing up had a badass yellow GT cruiser.

I had a bike swing up in my back yard until about a year ago. Good times. I know a lot of guys that raced that sorrento track, rode trails with many of them. I brought my cruiser out there once but never put it on the track. They had some kind of ongoing issue with the dirt they used, very Sandy and shells mixed in. I think they finally got a better surface but I pretty much just rode trails and a little street by then.
The Bike Connection was a pseudo rival to my team and I ran the ABA track in BR then so it felt sorta uncomfortable

That's it, that's the only track I ever raced on, the very first time I signed up they were hosting some kind of national, I did average in that. My brother raced an age group 2 years below me and flipped over the handlebars on that first tabletop and broke his collarbone in his first and only race. I still remember parts of that track, there was a double in the back lots of ppl didn't want a part of

I raced BMX here in Shreveport back in the late 80's. Home track was Bayou BMX but traveled to Hope, Arkansas and Tyler, Tx regularly to race also. First bike I raced was a Rebel. Cracked the frame on it and then got a FreeAgent. Also had a Robinson cruiser I raced a few times. Fun times.

I grew up in the front part of the neighborhood that connected back to Shipley's.

I think I raced every Friday night for a year an a half when I was around 13 or so.

I spent so many days there. Jeff, was the main guy that kept the track running. He was a good dude - he built and sold me a Mongoose out of extra stuff he had lying around when he found out my Redline had been stolen.
He was always working on something - car, bike, go-cart.

The trails in the woods were the shite, some of the jumps were sometimes packed with extra dirt to get catch more air.

It was the only place I raced becasue it was a 5 minute bike ride from my house.

ETA: Shipley's in the back part of a neighborhood off Frenchtown Rd. by Greenwell Springs Rd. , at the very end of Old Greenwell Springs Rd.

I wish I had pictures. My bike looked exactly like that except it had blue alloy handlebars.
Nice bike.
