Just recently got mine in the mail and have no idea what to avoid, just been trying to drive like a pawpaw.
if my report comes out good what should I expect for insurance rate savings?

Avoid driving after midnight.
Avoid excessive deceleration.
If it beeps, you're doing something wrong.
Don't let valet, or your wife drive.
That's about it.
ETA: You can track it online. I think I saved the max, 30%.

There's no way I'd ever get one of those. I enjoy driving too much.

Not worth the savings to have them spy on you

I think it was 3 months at the time. I had a second vehicle so I left the jeep parked most of the time unless I was only going short distances.

I just went and checked it. I already have 1 hard brake but I don't remember having to slam on the brakes recently. How many hard brakes does it take to have a negative effect?

I just recently did this. My final numbers are 4.11 hard brakes per week, 223 avg miles per week, and 2 minutes avg high risk time per week. I got 20% savings.

According to Progressive, the snapshot cannot negatively affect your rates. You should be able to track on the site what your current discount would be as it currently stands.
1 hard brake is not going to affect you in the long run. The frequent long trips and late night driving will bring the % down if done consistently.

Re: Hard Braking and Snapshot device:
Had the device on my truck for 6 months.
It is a bit trigger happy with the hard braking alert.
If travelling down Perkins Road in Baton Rouge (or a road with a similar speed limit with traffic lights sprinkled along it) at 45 mph, and a traffic light turns yellow just prior to arriving at the light, you're screwed unless you accelerate through the yellow light.
This ironically isn't considered a "safe" driving habit, though there is a Snapshot penalty for stopping for the light in that type of situation.
Without fail, the hard braking alert sounded under those circumstances.
Once while approaching at a low speed a RR track that didn't have a warning signal, I just barely tapped the brakes to make sure no train was approaching, and the hard braking alarm went off.
Again, my tapping the brakes to pause at the RR crossing is a safe driving habit, however with the Snapshot device in that situation, a penalty for "hard braking" was incurred.
I don't think the folks at Progressive are in any rush to lower your rates to a great degree, and maybe programmed the device difficult to "beat." That's just my opinion though.
I did save 15% on my insurance rate, which was better than nothing.
I asked and the average savings according to the representative was between 12 and 18 %. To get the max savings of 30 % you almost wouldn't be able to drive at all with the Snapshot device installed.

Next time, just don't hard brake, ever. You'll show those bastards!

no way in hell am I voluntarily allowing an insurance company to gather information on my driving. It will be used against you first chance they get.

We just got them in the mail. It definitely can negatively affect your rate. However I'm in Texas so maybe their policies differ by state.

It most certainly can negatively affect your rate. At least in Louisiana it can.

1.01 hard breaks a week
167.8 miles driven a week
1 minutes and 37 seconds of high risk driving

I believe it to be the automotive equivalent to a health insurance company asking you to go get a "wellness check" using their approved doctor. "We promise it can't hurt, only help....until you try to file a claim in 3 years and we'll use our doctor's results over your own to deny your claim"

I sell it
It can negatively affect your rate (Safeco has one with a minimum of 5% savings..only one on the market that offers no penalty)
For some of my clients, I recommend it.
Others, I do not.
All about driving habits, miles driven, time driven, etc.
It counts a hard brake a decelerating at more than 10mph/second.

So you accelerated through yellow lights or did most of your driving on roads with no stop lights?

The representative that I spoke with once I received my results indicated that the hard braking was the thing that "gets most people" that use Snapshot.
He also said that while other factors such as mileage and the times during which you drive (driving during "high risk" hours somewhere between 12 a.m. and 5 a.m., I think) are considered, the factor that bears the most weight in Progressive's calculations is the hard braking.
I did mention that I had received hard braking penalties for stopping at yellow traffic lights under the conditions I described above instead of accelerating through the yellow light. I had actually started writing down the date and time of when such a hard braking indicator sounded. Didn't make any difference. He just said, "we do prefer that you stop instead of going through the yellow light." Oh well.
But like I said, 15% discount was better than no discount.
Just drive 10 mph and leave very early when you need to be somewhere.
