Also, I used a cold water pump and it was awesome. Use it instead of ice and it keeps the swelling at bay.
Where do you get them?

I've heard that ice machines are invaluable. Ain't cheap, but invaluable.
They were just like small ice chests with pumps than circulates cooling water. Dr can prescribe. My mom had both done at the same time. She was 58, lived to 88, with them, never a problem.

surgeon promoted ice machine for controlling swelling. Set up time when your ornery was an issue. Couple of ice filled zip locks and bath towels worked as well

That will do the trick. I used it several times a day and always after PT.

How old are yall to get knees replaced or what did you do?
I just turned 73 and was told earlier this year I should seriously consider a total knee replacement. I had my ACL done back in 94 when I was 42 and the Dr. told me then that I would likely need a knee replacement sometime in my 70's------------and he was right. The ACL is gone, cartilage is deteriorating and I have arthritis in the joint that is not going to get better.
Right now I'm a year out of a serious ankle surgery and really not wanting to do the knee, but I do know this, every person I talked to while in PT for my ankle that had knee replacement surgery said they wish they wouldn't have waited so long to do it.
They said they feel very confident their quality of life will be much better once they healed up.

Somewhat related... had a horrendous what i thought was knee injury...could barley walk. Saw an orthopedist, got an injection and was told if it doesnt help come back and we'll maybe clean your knee out.
It didnt help...saw a PT instead... a month later im 100% healed no surgery or medicine.

Mom had one replaced several years ago, and she goes in on Monday for the other. She's in her 70s so recovery was a bit tough. Good luck to you!

quote:Can you walk long distances for exercise, or run? I'm close to 70, but find myself running as much as walking and my knees are fine, at the moment, but I always pay real close attention at my age to any little 'out of the ordinary' twinges.
Did both at the same time.

Two years out and had excellent results. The first week is brutal. Work hard in PT and you’ll be fine if you choose a good surgeon.

No issues walking long distances, did Disney twice since I had it done. Can’t run yet, can ride a bike though. What finally got me was my knees “catching”.and popping when I’d straighten my leg, worst pain ever.

My dad did a knee and a hip in the last couple of years. If memory serves I think the knee was the more difficult recovery for him, in terms of pain/discomfort. Best of luck old baw.

Surgery is easy, you're asleep.
My mom has had both knees replaced. She was awake for both surgeries. Discussed condos in Florida with the surgeon during the last one.

I get in between 40-50 miles a week of half walking / half running and when I say run, I mean a brisk jog at an avg. of 4.7 mph. I use really good running shoe that are amazing at shock absorptions.
But everyday I wonder if I'm damaging them by running and one day I'm going to be in stride and suddenly go, "frick! What was that?" and take a few steps in pain and realize that my knee is fricked. I kind of block it out of my mind, still sort of amazed that at age 70 I can do it all, especially considering how poorly I managed my physical fitness when I was younger.

After 40 years of running...right knee in 2019 left one in 2022. What help me recover fast was being in shape..Did rehab for two weeks in home then transferred daily to rehab clinc 2 miles from my home, the goal of the ladies there was to get my knee at 130 which happen in 2 weeks. You will know what 130 means once you start rehabing. My doctor told me I would go back to running within 6 months.....he lied. Abel to walk 5 miles daily with no pain at all. BTW pls forgive me for my horrible non use of puncations and spelling, sleepy long flight and Jack Daniels.

How far out are you? How do you feel?
Can I do my top secret national intelligence job from home after a week or so?
When did the surgical pain subside?
How long before you were walking without a cane or walker?
Mine is next week.
I had a partial a little over four months ago. My surgeon did not believe in going to physical therapy. I did two weeks of hourly exercises and ice packing. I used a walker the first week and a cane (most of the time) for the second week. The first three to four days were the worse. This was due to pain (especially at night), nausea and constipation. Nothing smelt or tasted good. I quit taking the pain drug on the third day and everything started to get better. I am back doing my regular yard work and walking. If I overdo it my knee will hurt. I moved several wheel barrow loads of sand a few days ago and it hurt for a few hours.
