Used to have 5 acres in Windy Hills, near Denali. Absolutely loved it, but had to sell it in the divorce.

Will do it again. DNR sells land every year.

I have family who did this years ago on pre-developed river frontage property. They got a great deal on the lot, and had no intentions more than building a boat dock and gazebo like area and doing exactly what you are wanting to do. That was twenty or more years ago. The surrounding area has been developed a good bit now, and they have decided to build on part of the lot. It has been a win/win for them.
Just look around and try to find something like this that has potential in the coming years.

right because if one investment is good at any time then it must be a good investment forever no matter the current price. Finna buy some Sears stock as we speak.

If you just want a couple acres to sit on and relax occasionaly then scratch your idea and go ahead and get a camper and just hit State Parks, National Parks, BLM Land and RV parks.

If you want a couple acres to have to continually maintain, fix issues, and then after all that get to relax on.....then buy some land.

Unless you are a tinkerer and want to start a mini farm or something than let someone else pay for it and you pay pennies on the dollar to use it and then leave when you're done.

You'll get bored with just a couple acres. Go big with your buy or go public for nearly free!

Why would you buy land to camp on a couple of weeks per year when you can hit up campsites practically for free?

Because then you have to deal with people who go to camp sites

I think it's a nice idea and I have thought about it myself. I'm trying to figure out why everyone jumped on you like you are asking about investment strategies for your retirement. Oh yeah, it's the OT. Might get better responses on the Outdoor board.

I've been looking into trying to buy land right outside of developing areas for a few months now. I don't know a ton about real estate but I'm learning more and more.

Word to the wise here.

Rural areas can be subject to rampant theft.
Put a strong gate on the road if possible

What’s happening on the land while you’re away? Do you plan to build a cabin, etc on it one day? Do you like that area enough to return year after year? Do you like projects, etc?

Long read about what it's like out there where you may be two hours from a 911 response. TL;DR, a dispute with your neighbor can have life altering consequences. LINK
