If you want a 3rd row, get a minivan or Suburban.

The new diesel suburban gets approximately the same fuel economy as a Subaru Outback. There is more maintenance costs with a diesel, but the fuel economy has gotten really impressive. You can probably maximize it by getting the two wheel drive model with the smallest wheels available.

No match for the new hybrid Toyota Sienna though, which gets about 39mpg. That is an impressive vehicle. The interior is legitimately nice.

Minivan is the obvious choice unless you need to tow or go off roading. If that’s the case, the Honda Pilot isn’t a great option either.

6 or 9 speed?

9 speed - it’s a Touring. Most of the complaints about the ‘16 transmission were on Elite and Touring, and those are the 9 speeds. It’s not the transmission issue itself that has turned me off on Honda, but rather it’s their absolute refusal to acknowledge the problem and work with their customers to fix it.

Nap,

You secure in your marriage?

I've heard involving a Pilot can be troublesome...

Order a Telluride from up north -- Ohio, Michigan etc. I got one from Michigan at a discount; more than covered the shipping. It's the third vehicle I purchased out of state to save money.

Me personally I love Toyota. I have a Tacoma with 200+k miles with no trouble that is almost worth what I paid for it ten years ago.
I would get a 4runner and tell the other kids to get a ride home. The 4runner used to have a 3rd row. Don't know why they stopped. It was stupid small but who cares.
If I could afford one I would get a Land cruiser.
She's off on the highlander for some reason and her and the girls are anti mini van.

We went from a 2016 Pilot to a 2021 Highlander. The 3rd row is usable in both, except for the smallest of kids. Whatever you get make sure the 2nd row is captain chairs, this make access to the back easier and gives a little more let room to those in the 3rd row. DO NOT GET A PILOT WITH A 2ND ROW BENCH SEAT.

I have a 2 year old Pilot and recently had a 4 year old Explorer. My in laws have a new Highlander. Of those 3 the Pilot is my favorite. The Highlander is the smallest overall for leg room.

We drove one. They are nice.

We ended up buying a 21 highlander. I think the is better and seats are a little more comfortable.

We test drove almost all 3 row SUVs not too long ago

The Pilot was my favorite - but too small for us. The Highlander was a nice surprise … and I did not care for the Telluride. The Telluride is very nice but it rode a lot rougher than the Pilot or Highlander. The Pilot was very smooth and handled well, although the interior needs a little help.

As for the domestic cars - the Chevys were my favorite

That's impressive, but it also points at the fact that Subarus are low-key gas guzzlers. (Most good cars are.)

Drove across and all around country in one with two big dogs, wife and two toddlers. The dogs were the lowest maintenance besides the car. Towing a substantial travel trailer over Rocky Mtn passes. Used third row to substitute dogs for parents for Glacier and other trips.

No frills all-weather people mover you can eek 30mpg out of (sans camper). Adequate turbo 4. Got 0% apr and 10/100 factory warranty. Subaru is close to Toyota w value holding.

We researched all of the smaller 3 row SUVs last year. We went with a Traverse. It has the largest interior space of all of them. Has the most usable cargo space when the 3rd row is being used as well.

I wish we could have found one without black interior. That’s the only thing we don’t like because everything shows up on the black. Otherwise, no regrets. We got the RS package, it house pretty much all the bells and whistles besides adaptive cruise control, and a simple roof.

Recent WRX and Crosstrek models have actually appreciated in value. It's pretty crazy.

I just shopped this segment extensively the past month and purchased a Nissan Pathfinder.

The 2022 model is all new and Nissan knocked it out of the park with the redesign. The telluride & palisade were great also but the markup is insane. Nissan is offering zero percent financing for 3 years.

The Kia Sorento was impressive also.

There are a lot of great vehicles in this segment, it’s tough to go wrong.

People will shite on this, but the Durango is a great combo in size/power/capability with the Hemi/tow package and back seats are great.

My plan is a Durango if/when the market cools down for my family and boat towing needs. Probably target a citadel model.

I have had a couple of Pilot's over the years. Last March bought a Palisade. The Palisade is superior to the Pilot in every way. I would not have believed it years ago but Hyundai has passed up Honda in quality and features.
