My wife is on her 3rd one, 2006, 2013, and 2018. They have all been great cars mechanically. The 13 was white and had a paint peeling issue, otherwise great vehicles. Would buy again.

I don’t know what most non-luxury SUVs are like, but my SIL has a Pilot and the interior looks and feels really cheap.
We have a 2020 Aviator (Lincoln version of the Explorer), and we have had no issues.

I have an Acura MDX which is just the Pilot with some fancier finishes. The 3rd row is useless for kids older than 10 or 11. And, like was mentioned before, you lose your cargo space when the seats are up. I’m assuming the Pilot is similar but may have slightly more cargo space than the MDX because the rear of the Pilot is more vertical.
We got a Palisade in January to replace our Highlander and couldn’t be happier. 3rd row is actually functional and you still have decent storage behind the third row when it’s up. But, as you said. It’s damn near impossible to get the Palisade or Telluride right now.

Since interior space seems to be a concern, I'd recommend either a 2018+ Traverse/Enclave or a VW Atlas. All 3 are vast inside.
Believe it or not, the Traverse has more interior space than a Tahoe...
My wife has a '19, with the rear captains chairs.. Seats seven. Only reason we decided on the Traverse because the Acadia only seats two in the rear seats..
Comes with a 3.8 liter V6 that puts out 310HP...
We got the LT3 with the 20" wheels..

Buy a minivan. You wont regret it. You don't look cool hauling kids in a big SUV either.

Have a friend who recently got rid of their 4 year old Pilot because it was too small, especially the third row. They bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I think it has a third row. I had a Highlander and the third row was very small and cargo area is non existent when popped up. Getting into the third row is a PITA if you have bench seats with car seats/booster seats installed.
I now have a 2022 Telluride and it is ah-mazing. Rides better, I sit up higher, the interior is laid out better, it has captain chairs in the back and the third row is a good size. The cargo area is still small when the third row is up but it is larger than the highlander and there is some storage underneath as well. I don't know if it would fit a large wheeled cooler but we can get four suitcases in just fine with room for random bags here and there. I drive it in comfort mode mostly and it has enough pickup for me, my husband likes the sport mode. We got lucky that the dealership had one coming in with all the options we wanted but I would have gladly waited the four months to order one. :)

Had a 2016 Explorer... Loved it until the warranty expired. POS cost us over 5K year 4. We traded it for a Cadillac XT6. I hate that car so much!!!! Trading it for a Tahoe now.
I would go Pilot over a Ford FWIW

We looked at several SUVs and the best for us was the Telluride.

Currently starting to look for myself ... not getting another Honda although my 2013 Pilot has been fine and has almost 170,000 miles
Trying to decide between 5 and 7/8 passenger seating ... don't "need" the larger vehicle but it's what I'm used to.
What kind of price did you Telluride buyers pay? Considering looking at Telluride/Pallisade and the smaller one of each brand as well as RAV4.

I thought we were sold on an explorer.
Run away. The new one has major issues.
Pilot is a very good car, but the interior is a little dated.
Got the wife an Explorer limited in 2015. It has been a pretty solid car for us. But I have heard there have been issue with them going forward.
The ride on the Explorer is/was fantastic.

I'd recommend the Telluride. Have been driving one for 18 months and its easily my most favorite vehicle I've ever owned.
I was not a huge fan of the Explorer when I had one as a rental a couple weeks ago. It wasn't bad by any means but it just didn't compare to my Telluride on how I liked the drive.

Wife went and looked at a Pilot and left with an Oddesy. It just has so much more room.

I was once in the anti-minivan crowd. I just traded in my Explorer for a Kia Carnival. It's "kind of" a minivan but looks a lot better. The interior is amazing with lots more space than the Explorer and really great tech.

We bought a 2016 Touring. Traded it in after a few years as the transmission felt like it was slipping. Apparently the transmission issues were worked out with the 2019 model. We traded in for a 2019 AWD Touring. She has 38,000 miles on it and whenever I ride in it I feel the transmission slipping or bucking a bit. We also have a mystery popping noise in the driver side fender area that the Dealer cannot find. Other than that great vehicle. No way am I trading it in now with prices the way they are but I am considering it when prices start to come down. Other than the Transmission issue it’s been a solid car.

I think it depends if you are looking for permanent 3rd row access or not. We have a 2013 (no issues other than faded headlights) and the 3rd row is great for OCCASIONAL use. I'd never get a smallish SUV if I needed constant 3rd row access. We use it for when we have more than 2 kids with us. So far no complaints from 10yos.

There is no better vehicle for a family with younger children. Sliding side doors make getting kids in and out of car seats in parking lots so much easier. Too many people are concerned with style over substance now.
Those days are long behind me now

Pretty much my experience with regards to a third row seat.
Cargo room sucks, the little two are the only ones who can sit back there and they are aging out of the ability to do so.
