you didnt go from one crappy school to an even shittier school because of subjective/objective grading

TLDR I do not want to go off topic, and the OP daughter will be fine, just get hit or misses with some teachers.

I did not consider Louisiana Tech a crappy university, considering it is the only other tier 1 as of now.

All I meant was that since grading can be very subjective, your ability to get a high GPA or a specific degree can be affected.

You can go to LSU and get a 3.5 in economics, but go to Stanford for the same degree and barely make 2.7 or just change majors. It is not that you are dumb, but the challenge varies by school (ie subjective grading)

He asked for advice. Among the a-hole comments, legitimate advice was given.

Like every OT thread.

How was it supposed to go?

She has no audience at home. I'm sure her friends are already tired of hearing about it. She had to tell someone.

I am a teacher. Frankly, I cannot imagine ever losing a set of quiz papers. That's pretty bad. I have a metal bin on my desk where ALL papers go. I pick them ALL up and paper clip (with a binder clip) them together at the end of the class period they were placed there. If I grade them in school, they go in a "send home" basket to be placed in their Friday folder. (this is grade 5) If I take papers home to grade, the clipped bunch of papers goes in my tote bag and right back in when I finish grading them. It's pretty foolproof. And it's a pretty sorry event for a teacher to lose a whole set of papers. I am trying to imagine what I would do in that situation, and I'm thinking if I couldn't produce the paper, I would drop the grade. I would feel like such a piece of crap if I lost a set of papers, I wouldn't want to even report the grades to the parents.

As a student who was the near victim of a teacher's grading "mistake" (I don't think it was--I think the motherfricker tried to dock me a grade for reasons I won't get into), I would be pretty fricking furious and demand that I either get the quiz back or be allowed to retake the quiz. And if he didn't acquiesce to my request, I'd go to the administration.

ETA: for those of you counseling to let it go, I would only do so if this quiz meant something along one percent of the overall grade. If it's worth any more than that, as the student, I'd feel like the teacher was purposefully or negligently putting my grade in the class at risk, which I couldn't abide. Given the competitiveness of college admissions and scholarships, getting a B in one class can actually matter as to where you end up collegiately. In the long haul, will it mean much? Maybe not, but I'd sure as shite never want to look back and wonder "What if Mr. frickstick hadn't lost my quiz and I had a 4.0 instead of a 3.9? Maybe I would have ended up at another university or maybe I would have gotten a better scholarship." Laugh all you want, but the sad truth is it's true.

I can't either ... 3 sections of quizzes can't be found or at least haven't been brought for the students to review. Again, I'm letting her handle it but was honestly wondering if other schools have some type of policy about this. Never had one of my children tell me this before. What concerns her is the past grading errors this teacher (whom they LOVE) has made in actual grading AND in posting the grades.

eta And for the record to those with snide comments, if you do nothing as parent, you "don't care" and are "uninvolved with raising your kids". If you DO try to help, then you're "overinvolved and not teaching your kids anything". Geeze ... I was asking about other schools and clearly pointed out that I've told her that SHE needs to handle this ... isn't that the middle of the road??

Honestly, I will admit that. I personally dont care if people judge me. I think all 1st tiers are over rated. The school does not matter if you are not satisfied with your degree.

Not a teacher but I can answer the question. Yes, she's sleeping with him. Or at least was. I'd guess once she stopped is when the bad grades started coming in.

As a teacher: YOU need to be the one to ask for the quiz. Let the teacher know that your daughter has made attempts and now you are getting involved. If the teacher can not provide the quiz then I would demand a re-test. The only problem is if the teacher claims they did give the quiz back. It would just be your daughters word against his and administration is going to back him up unless they are trying to get rid of him.

Well, she's apparently KNOWN for missing questions. Looks like we got a good old-fashioned Mexican standoff here

Sounds like a real adult way to handle it.... I mean it is not like people make mistakes grading papers.

As a teacher, we are required to give back all graded assignments within three days (excluding major papers, exams, etc.).

If I lost someone's work, I would have given them either a redo or no grade.

Here's my professional educator advice, fwiw, lol:

If your daughter has asked numerous times for the quiz and he hasn't delivered, keep in mind that she probably isn't the only student dealing with the issue. If he's doing this on a regular basis, you're not the only parent who has noticed. That means that most likely, parents have reported this to the principal, and you need to do the same, because good principals take note when a teacher pulls this kind of stuff. The principal is most likely to bump it back to the teacher for them to correct the problem, but if they don't, call the counselor to schedule a parent-teacher conference with a principal present. It seems like a lot of steps, but it can be accomplished in a couple of days. If it's a good school, the principal will have it straightened out and also hold the teacher's feet to the fire come evaluation time. Doing this helps the principal use ammo when they non-renew shitty teachers' contracts at the end of the year.
