They are basically mid pack as far as reliability goes among the manufacturers.

They fixed the head gasket issue quite some time ago. The newer models are doing fine.

Subarus are good cars.

My relatives in BTR own the dealership. I’ve driven them, not a bad car. They are well made, great in owner satisfaction, dependability and resale value.

I have a 2000 Outback that’s my spare car/winter beater. Great, great car. Always there when I need it.

Subarus are very good in all regards. If you’re talking used, the gasket issue was a pretty big deal in a range of years, I want to say 08-ish to 12-ish but don’t quote me on that.

Only issues I’ve seen with two were that the larger flatter windshields, while better for visibility, are more prone to cracking. And if you have to replace a tire you either have to shave the new one down or replace all 4 due to the AWD.

punctures aside, rotate your tire every other oil change and it'll help prevent having to do this due to uneven wear.

Powertrains are old and unrefined. Worse gas mileage than a lot of other brands. Not as good on tech. Head gasket issues. Unless I lived up north where the AWD would be nice, there are better options out there.

Mine has 3 differentials. I'd say that's fairly new and refined.

AWD will do that to ya....but I do get in the low-to-mid 30's MPG on the highway.

that was mainly on the old 2.5 engines.....unless you're in a turbo and just really love to hear it spool up.

I have had 2 as commuter cars, great in snow and wet. They are common in the north w snow and bad weather. All the stereo types aside i would buy another. No issues w either one. My cousins daughter was in a bad wreck in one and pretty much walked away unscathed, car looked like hell.

This is true. This and the oil-burning issues were resolved after the early 2010s. I bought an Outback several years after I moved to Knoxville from southeast Alabama. I only want an Outback from here on out. I plan to drive mine another five years and I'd love to upgrade to the new Wilderness Editions.

Just steer clear from the early 2010s models. I made the mistake of buying a 2013 model, which is known to be the most unreliable of the last few decades. I bought it with 89k on it and I'm now at 135k and so far I've had to replace the valve case after it went out, my driver window currently won't go down, and I'm pretty sure the AC pump is on its last leg. Again, most of this is unique to that model year, there shouldn't be too many issues with newer models.

Super safe vehicle though. I've wrecked mine 3 times, twice due to my epilepsy, took out road signs in both of those and it has kept me very safe. It's just a great utility vehicle. I'm an big outdoor enthusiast and a photographer/videographer and it gets me to anywhere I need to go and carries everything I'll need with ease. It is also a very comfortable car for passengers.

I’m on my 3rd Outback..a ‘23. My company uses them for fleet cars, so I put a lot of road miles on them before I swap at 80K miles. Overall, it’s a good car. Plenty of room, AWD, reliable, & built-in crossbars (on Outback) for cargo box, bike racks, etc.
The ‘23 has a massive infotainment screen, which I like, but is a little overkill. The earlier infotainment screens were buggy. I can’t say much about other models, but I know the Forester is a good one too.

Is the outback the most similar to a xterra or pathfinder?

Not really…the Outback looks like a crossover, but is basically a raised AWD wagon. The Subaru Ascent 3 row is probably the closest equivalent.
Xterra was a solid body-on frame suv..rougher ride, but a cool vehicle. Xterra hasn’t been made in quite awhile. Hopefully, Nissan will bring it back. The new Pathfinder is a solid crossover & looks really nice. I think they have more trail-focused packages as well.

My mother in law has one. It looks like a Camry.
I have no idea why she didn't get a Camry.

The only thing I know is the radio/screen has this stupid arse coating on it that makes it impossible to see if sunlight is hitting it.

Image for example

Never owned one but everyone I ever knew who did were as loyal or more so than Toyota owners. Resell value is VERY high...
