My 8 year old is "highly functional autistic"

She is a pain in the arse sometimes

My wife finally convinced me to see a psychiatrist based on school and therapy recommendations

The Doc wants to put my kid on this drug

I don't like it

Am I way off base here?

I want to do what is best for my girl, but I HATE the idea of drugging my child

I'm pissed right now, my uncle is a nuclear pharmacist, his son is a regular pharmacist

Uncle agrees with me, cousin mostly agrees with me, but says "it won't hurt to try and might help"

Anyone here have any insight, experience or thoughts that might be helpful?

Based on my cousin's insight, IF I see dramatic changes in personality, stop it immediately

My thought, maybe it helps her, but I'd rather she suffer in school than lose who she is

The wife is a teacher (23 years in public schools in Hoover, AL)

She is worried about her educational development

Me? I care way more about her being physically and emotionally whole

My thought is if I see a drastic change, I'm shutting it down - don't care if she falls behind in school

Our boy just graduated HS with a 4.39 and got a 32 on the ACT, starts Auburn Monday with scholarships

Next 2 are 15 and 10, both with stellar grades and probable schollys

But I don't care if the youngest makes C grades or gets held back, I just want her to be happy...

Anyone here that can tell me if I am overreacting?

I would always get a 2nd opinion on kid stuff.

What does “high functioning autism” mean in your situation?

It seems like they are handing out autism diagnoses like candy these day for lots of things.

You’re right to be concerned about drugging her. Why does the doc want to put her on it, what is the intended goal of doing so?

What symptoms are they hoping to control with Lexapro? Anxiety? 8 seems so young.

Lexapro was a miracle drug for me when I needed it years ago. It made me calm and preternaturally happy. Like, I had no other emotion but happy, even in situations where I knew I should be having a different reaction. That said, I was like 30, not 8.

In my experience, Lexapro does not present with some of the side effects/withdrawal issues you see in Paxil or even Zoloft. There are certain medications you will hear families bitch about pretty consistently and Lexapro isn't one of them really.

Disclaimer: I am not an MD, just been around kids with severe emotional concerns for a long, long time.

Subtle “I’ve had sex 4 times” thread.

Serious note: can’t help you with the advice, but it sounds like you’ve raised reasonable points, and are in tune enough with your kids life that you’ll make the right decision concerning what’s right for her.

It is fricking crazy, kids that are hyper and don't pay attention well are "ADHD" and "on the spectrum"

Kids that have to wear a straight jacket in a rubber room and be tethered to a dog in public are also "on the spectrum

The disparity in symptoms is quite dramatic

When I was a kid, if they didn't know exactly what it was they were" retarded", today "autism" is the trendy diagnosis

My child has developmental speech delay and is super strong willed

No one will ever convince me that it is the same thing as kids I see that need 24 hour supervision so they don't hurt themselves

I'm angry, I don't want my baby on drugs

I really feel like this has more to do with controlling behavior than helping her

She does mind me better than anyone, and I understand she can be frustrating

But I'm pissed

And I'm committed to "trying this" (at 1ml per day for 2mos)

But I don't like it, hoping someone here has some insight...

your posting style

prompts me to ask you

have you been tested

to see where you fall

on the spectrum ?

and I'm no expert but just love her ( its obvious you do) and let her know that every day. Life is tough, but the one thing kids needs the most is their parents love and support

you got this

I mean like most SSRI’s it depends on the dosage and effect on the individual.

Personally I wouldn’t dose an 8 year old, but that’s just me. There’s a lot of development that’s going on and seems dangerous to mess with it

If my medical doctor wanted to prescribe my 8 year old Lexapro, I would find a new medical doctor

ETA: if you look around enough, you can always find a doctor to agree with you

thank you, I will start the research there

Cousin did say it "might help" and "won't hurt at that low dose"

But I will be watching, the Doc was actually shocked we had not tried medication with 5 years of diagnosis, that is 100% because I have been fighting this for 5 years...

I see anything I don't like and I will start fighting again, I may even divorce over this, but that won't help my girl...

An ssri seems like a benign treatment in this case. I have a low functioning autistic kid, and have her on risperdal and an ssri.

There are currently some medical studies, and litigation, that suggests that these meds effect children differently than adults due to the child’s brain still developing. Remember that the drug was designed for adults and that doesn’t mean that a smaller dose makes things equal. There is a saying in medicine: “Kids aren’t just small people.” They are different physiologically and require different treatments.
