Was mainly wondering about experience with the procedure options, or anything else I should consider. I’m leaning toward going under and the pelvic bone extraction. The shot seems like it would be a longer time commitment with faster recovery, but there is the potential for some side effects while it’s increasing bone marrow production.
It's not that bad. I've done it once. They make a small incision above one of your hips then hammer a hollow nail into the top of your hip bone. Takes less than a minute. More pressure than pain. Not that bad at all.

Pain pills SHOULD await you on the other side.
Shots to increase RBC would make me worry about clots? I am a nurse but am still sort of talking out my arse on the issue in regards to stats and complications.
Nice job regardless.

You were awake?
There is NO frickING WAY I'd be awake for someone drilling/hammering into my pelvic bone and then sucking out the precious bodily fluids within. I'd be willing to go through with it, but they're paying a couple hundred bucks for a NA to give me the Michael Jackson treatment while they're doing it (minus the walking away and letting me die part, of course).

People are awake for bone marrow aspiration and biopsied but not for harvests for donation.

Shots are to boost WBC counts not RBC. No significant thrombotic risk.

Been on the registry since college but haven’t donated. Always wonder if I’ll ever be needed. Would gladly do it because I would hope someone would do it for my family if needed.

Yep. It's just a nail. Local didn't help much but it really wasn't that bad.

I wasn't put under. Local and they harvested in my hip. Really not that big of a deal. Felt like what it was. Hammered a big hollow nail into the top of my hip.

I have no problem with needles but I don’t think I could do what you did awake

I’ve heard it’s very painful
I’ll gladly take some pain for a stranger to have their life extended. Gives me some purpose. A few tramadol and Advil will work just fine.

If I could live through a vasectomy conscious, especially with the smell of the cauterization, I think I would be ok with being awake if I had to.
Thanks again for all the info. You definitely helped alleviate some of the thoughts running through my mind.
Hope to update this thread in 6-8 weeks and hopefully again months after that.

BIL did it a decade ago. Said it was painful as hell, sorry. But felt great that he did it and help another. Kudos to you!

Bump the thread if you have any questions but like I said the folks at Be the Match are awesome
Good luck throughout the process!

You will save a life. What a wonderful thing to do! God bless you!

I have been part of a team that performs extractions from the pelvic bone. I am also in the registry and once got a call as a potential but no second call.
Personally, if I were to ever get a call to be a donor and were given the option, I would most likely go for the shot, but that is just me.
Regardless, you are making a sacrifice to potentially save a life, so that is awesome.
It would be great if everyone joined.

WAY to go. It won't be pleasant, but you may save a life.
This is what I’ve heard. I checked into a few years back but have to admit that I pretty much chickened out before I ever even started.
Do it, and remind me everyday that I’m a chickenshit until I make the decision to save a life too.

First as a person who has had a stem cell transplant procedure I want to thank all of you guys that have donated, will be donating, and that are signed up. You guys are awesome!!!
In my case they were able to use my own stem cells so I had to do the collection, then about a week later I was admitted to the hospital and started the stem cell procedure.
Getting back to the OP the way they did my collection was the shots then later hooked me up to the collection machine as the other poster stated. Nothing more than having IV’s that you will ever notice. As far as any pain from the shots, I already had pain in my bones and was taking painkillers so I really didn’t notice much difference. I was nervous doing the shots and collection procedure but it was over before I knew it and there was nothing to be nervous about. They take very good care of you during your time there.
Once again thanks to all and God Bless.

I’m surprised there are so many people here who have donated. That’s pretty awesome.
I’ve also donated bone marrow. A guy at my old job held a drive to find a match for his wife. Nobody matched but I got in the registry and got the call a few years later.
Long story short I got a trip to DC and the pelvic extraction was performed at Georgetown university hospital. It was pretty cool and surprisingly easy. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
