Dad went this morning for his cystoscopy and he has an enlarged prostate. At this point it’s too large to be treated with just medication. Thankfully, non-cancerous. Just curious if anyone has had the surgery, how it went, etc?

I had a robotic prostatectomy just three weeks ago to remove my enlarged prostate (53yo - 22 PSA). Surgeon said normally they weigh about 20-30g when they remove a cancerous prostate - mine was 100g!! The size caused my bladder to take a little longer to recover and had to have catheter for 2 weeks (though I hear 2 is usually the norm - mine originally said I would only need it for a week).

Surgery was pretty easy. Took pain medication in the hospital, but never needed it after I left the next day. Only issue now that the catheter is removed is the occasional urine squirt that will surprise me here and there - but that has improved tremendously in the last week. Not expected to need radiation or chemo in the future.

Thankfully it isn't cancerous but he dicked around about telling his GP about his issues with urine flow and discomfort, so what normally would be treated with meds now needs surgery since it's pushing into his bladder.

The gist I'm getting from most here is that an overnight stay is probably likely with inpatient surgery. 1 to 2 weeks with a catheter and managing symptoms of incontinence/pain afterward.

I just had a cystocopy and have similar prognosis (large prostate but no cancer). Considering aquablation

As a guy who’s never had that done, man the idea of a catheter freaks me out

In 2015 I had to get my first and only catheter put in due to a bad kidney stone .

I asked the nurse. “So it just goes in the tip right?”

Nurse: “No all the way into you bladder.”

Then she shows me what is about to go in me. The circumstances of a ball point pen.

Me: “You got to be fricking kidding me.”

To say I was freaked out was an understatement.

hard to believe but it doesn''t Most of your nerve endings are outside your unit, not inside.

Mine has been enlarged for 30 years. It is now 3 times larger than normal but zero indication of cancer. Frequent urination is the problemo. 3 meds ($200/month) for relief.

Pretty sure a TURP procedure is in my future. Trans Urethral Resection Procedure. For you young guys that is where they core the prostate out like an apple so it eases pressure on bladder, urethra etc…Can’t wait!

Take it from an old timer, NEVER miss an annual urologist appt!

Unless cancer is involved, I wouldn't do any removal of a prostate. There is a reason why the operation is called "a radical prostatectomy".

I had a procedure called uro lift done about 2 years ago. Worked great but when prostate gets bigger I'll need it again.

Everything done through dick head. I came home with a catheter inserted but pulled it out in 2 days.

Actually I had a catheter after bad kidney stone surgery and could not get to my doctor for removal. His office staff talked me through removing it myself. Not pleasant, but not all that bad.

BB, I had TURP surgery at the age of 70 and a prostate artery embolization at age 71.

TURP was unpleasant for about a week, but the results were great.

The PAE was not bad, but if your Dad has it make certain that he drinks copious amounts of water to get the iodine out of his system. If the iodine remains in his system it can affect kidney function.

Best of luck to your Dad.

Aquablation- great procedure. Will need a catheter for anywhere from 1-5 days. Can have some bleeding after that usually stops. Lower risks of incontinence or ejaculation issues

TURP - been around for a long time and still a great procedure assuming your prostate isn’t MASSIVE

Urolift - do not recommend. Tends to fail after a couple years

Laser enucleation of prostate - good procedure with less bleeding. Small percentage have trouble holding urine in after

Robotic simple prostatectomy - great procedure for very big prostates. They don’t remove the whole prostate so don’t have as much of the ED and incontinence problems like you do when they remove the whole prostate for cancer.

Ultimately about improving quality of life, getting off meds, and avoiding being the guy in his 80s wearing a catheter full time

Present.

Treated it by medication for over fifteen years. Best decision I ever made.

I had Urolift surgery in May for an enlarged prostate, which was causing me to have bladder infections constantly. It has worked great in addition to great urine flow.

worst part would be having a long freaking tube stuck up into your junk
had this after a long shoulder surgery. It’s all good until it’s time to come out…she grabbed one tug full then another. Felt like someone plucked the frick out of my pecker that was the worst part of entire surgery and it lasted 13 -1/2 hours.
