re: Hearing aid question

Posted by Weagle89 on 11/3/25 at 7:49 pm to
I turn 60 later this month, so yes, I am a bit ahead of most on here. About 3 years ago I got hearing aids as a Christmas gift for my wife as she was tired of repeating herself. I have tinnitus along with some hearing loss, and hearing aids don't cure the tinnitus but the hearing aids definitely help overall. I couldn't bring myself to spring for the $5000 pair the Dr's office offered so I go the Costco set for $1500 and they have worked pretty well.
10 yrs remaining at 2.875%. Wife wants to move, but just can't justify that unless we can pay cash, so yes, while just short of being a boomer, I am part of the problem.
I saw this thread and all I could think of was this from mad tv
Similar to one I told my kids recently when they moved out on their own in crappy first apartments. "It is ok to struggle. It is not ok to suffer."

The other one is "It's ok to be frugal, it's not ok to be cheap", meaning to deny yourself can be good, but don't deny others what they earned/deserve.

Not sure it qualifies as wisdom, but I am old enough to be an elder,

Daily tipping rant

Posted by Weagle89 on 8/8/25 at 5:20 pm
I had a new one tonight. Went to dinner and when the check came, I wasn't paying attention so I filled in the tip line and put the total in the next blank line, only to find out that the next blank line was a "+ kitchen tip" line. The check had the standard 18%, 20% 22% suggestions at the bottom. Am I supposed to tip 20% for the standard tip, the add something for the kitchen tip and if so, is it a percentage, a few bucks...? Is there a standard for this (note, I just left the standard 20%+ tip, and crossed out the kitchen tip this time).

East aurora. My son’s girlfriend grew up in that area so we were tracing some of her stomping grounds

Wrapping up my Buffalo trip. Spent most of my time with family so don’t have a lot of review info but wanted to thank those above for their recommendations. We did go to Bar Bill tonight and my wife got the wings and I got the beef on we k both of which were very good.

Personal plug (son is the chef) if anyone in the future is in the Allentown area of Buffalo give cafe 59 a shot. Food takes time to get but it was very good.
Ironically I was just watching Fox News (I know, my mistake) to see what they were saying and they had a republican strategist and Democratic strategist on talking about the implications and what can be done to "take the temperature down". The "strategists" promptly start pointing the figure at each other, with the republican talking about this being the 8 year anniversary of the attack on Steve Scalise et al, then the democrat saying it is always right wing people doing these things, saying, "the trump shooter was a republican, the list of targets by this person were all democrats so obviously a right wing nut, and let's not mention Jan 6". I was quickly reminded not to watch the MSM.

Westin is a good suggestion. People like the Edwin downtown, but the walking bridge next to it is under renovation for the next year+. The rooftop bar there (Whiskey Thief) is nice

Not exactly a tourist Mecca but going there to see our son in mid June. Other than Niagara, any suggestions for things to see places to eat?
A priest can’t violate the privacy oath but they can do almost anything g as part of the penance. So the priest could make a confessor required to turn himself in as part of his penance or else he is not forgiven.
Personal opinion but ever since the Sandusky thing came to light but there seems to be a concentration of this activity in Pennsylvania. My wife has a friend whose adopted son was “allegedly” molested by a teacher and the school helped cover it up and he got away with it. The kid is now in jail as the whole situation really messed him up. It is a very sad situation. There seems to something wrong with that state.
I wish one of the cops would start repeating “the power of Christ compels you”
To be fair, we don’t claim him/ it
That is propofol (aka milk of amnesia) and is a pretty amazing drug. When you come around it is like waking for the most restful nap ever.

re: Charleston must dos

I know there are a bunch of Charleston threads, but I find the search feature lacking, so wanted to ask. I am OT poor I guess, and not ready to drop $400+ per night to stay downtown. Are there any recommendations on where / what area of Charleston to look for accommodations?
