Towing with a 4cyl anything isnt a great idea, IMO. They do that in the EU because of the ridiculous fuel cost. It certainly isnt safe and I bet they routinely exceed GVWR.
A V6 vehicle will give you better low-end torque and probably larger brakes. Stay within weight specs when you're towing.

Own a 24 Grand Highlander Hybrid Limited / AWD. 50k miles on the odometer. Zero issues thus far. Great car. Seats 7 comfortably and gets 35 MPGs. Perfect for long road trip family vacations.
Would recommend… Good luck finding it though. It took me 3 months to get the one we have. If you are more flexible on color, make etc it might be easier.

Volvo XC90 Hybrid. Twin Turbo 4 cylinder. 450 Horses. 523 lbs. Torque.
Unreal Gas mileage, but hauls arse when you need it. Blow that Highlander, and other SUVs, like BMW out the water.
Plus--Safest Car on the road.

. Yet in Europe you see Camry's and tiny cars pulling full campers.
Because they don’t have a lot of choices over there. They can just say, yes I’ll take that loaded F-250. Their choices are: little shitty car, or even littler and shittier car. Have nice day!

FWIW
We were in the same position earlier this year.
Picked the Subaru ascent over the GH. No regrets so far.

Yes. 48 years ago I bought a big lot and built a nice house for 38,000 total.
My friends and I built it. Everything. All of the labor. I was 19 years old.

Upgraded the wife from an Outback to an Ascent couple of months ago. Great ride, very happy.

I have the Lexus version and absolutely love it, the size is perfect and 4 cyl turbo is fine for daily driving. I don’t tow with it, so can’t comment on that.

Also looking at a pimped out VW Atlas, but this vehicle seems popular with poors.
Only weak people like let other people's perceptions guide their decisions. If you like it, buy it.

I like that Passport. My wife has been casually thinking about getting a new car after her sister just got done car shopping after her Highlander got totaled.
We dont need a 3rd row, just my wife and I and maybe a 75 lbs English bulldog 95% of the time, so it's something I'm trying to steer her to instead of a 3rd row jobber.
