Why were these 7th graders cheering?

Did you read Kashmir’s response?

JFK wasn’t well liked in the south, that’s why LBJ was his VP - if you’ve seen the movie JFK - the part at the beginning with jack lemon at the fairgrounds - his comments - that’s what my grandparents and their siblings thought too

We were in the middle of end of ?6 week test period so it wasn't announced until the end of the school day, and announced as has been shot.

I lived close enough to D.C. to have heard a lot of 'rumors' of Kennedy parties and infidelities. Jackie was turned down for the hunt club in a nearby county until she bought land that the hunt rode over, they were that unpopular.

The three day TV black out of anything but Kennedy Funeral was the irritant for many who did not think he was a good president and who still felt the Bay of Pigs disaster and the Russian influence on Cuba.

Conspiracy chatter wasn't that big, even with the Oswald shooting.

13 yrs old. Our high school intercom ordered an assembly in the assembly room and the principle informed us the president had been shot dead.

13-years-old in 8th grade chasing girls in courtyard. We’re told he was shot in neck. We thought he would make it. Then told he was dead. An assembly was called in gym and the teachers were bawling.

Got home, mom was crying (South Louisiana Catholics) and dad just forlorn. Then while getting ready for church on Sunday morning, Oswald gets offed by Ruby. My dad said something was really wrong but I didn’t quite get his drift.

Lot of people just didn’t buy the single shooter deal. Lot of talk about Castro and the mob. I still think this isn’t far off the mark.

Really enjoyed the movie “JFK” — don’t think it was all BS. Lot of truth there.

I remember it well, my grandson was sitting on my lap letting me read him a book when wife (no pics) came running into the room screaming saying “Kennedy has been shot!!!” It was a very surreal experience

Some of us old farts are night owls.

I was home sick from school watching As the World Turns, I think, and old Uncle Walter came on reporting it. Black and white tv left a lot to be desired. We got only 3 channels out on the farm.

It was a shock. As much a shock as 9/11.

I was at recess right after lunch and word spread to all of us. We were in shock, kids were crying, and I couldn’t believe it really happened.

I was teasing a little. My dad was born in 1949 so pretty close to you if that's your birth year in your username.

We only had 3 channels too until I was about 10 or so. I certainly think that was one of those watershed moments that you'd remember exactly where you were.

Was in 7th grade on an Air Force base, don't recall an announcement that he was assassinated only one over the P.A. system that school was dismissed for the day. The time was near 2pm shortly after Walter Cronkite called it on CBS news.

Remember like it was yesterday, the school hallway with everyone gathering their text books and stuff and leaving. We heard why on the way out.

Base locked down and Dad became scarce for a few days. We kids watched the news coverage and funeral on a small black and white console TV, and weren't old enough to really understand the significance. Still, it was compelling viewing even at that age.

JFK was a great president and a leader, in those days more like a moderate republican than democrat, compared to today. There are few that have his war time biography and subsequent history. Not without warts, but a time when politicians were far more accomplished and dignified than today, and our country united in common purpose.

I was in 8’th grade at a Catholic school, principal came over the intercom announcing Kennedy had been shot.Teacher started leading us in prayer and after awhile principal came back on with the news that he had died.We were all very somber and subdued,no cheering are anything like that.
I actually watched Oswald get shot on live t.v.,I was shocked.
Considering Kennedy’s legacy of the Bay of Pigs fiasco and getting us in Vietnam Nam,he got what he deserved.

I haven’t heard that name in a long time.

Regarding the OP, I’ve asked my mom about this before. She was very upset when it happened. She still has bumper stickers in her closet.

Most of those people thought it was Camelot.
