I am old enough to remember Audubon zoo in the late 1970s, when it looked like this, literally just animals in cages.. i didnt realize as a kid how depressing it was, til they opened the “new” zoo in the early 80s and it was like night and day

Skipped school in 79 and took my nephew. Have pictures somewhere. And yes I remember the animals in those concrete and steel cages.

Always one of my favorite things to do.

I’m pretty sure that was part of the traveling circus that would set up in mall parking lots.

Yes! I remember.
I wonder how those Elephants from the early 80’s are doing now.
Probably retired and taking it easy in a habitat similar to where Bubbles the Chimp has enjoyed his golden years.

I do not but I do remember riding a pretty good sized old gal from Phoenix City Alabama in Columbus one night in 1983. She was pretty good sized ole gal but calling her an elephant would be unkind....

They could put the elephants toward the back of the zoo, where the fat people are to tired to walk to.
An elephant could easily carry them in their scooters. Build a boarding ramp and strap 'em down...Elephants are stong as shite...

Rode the elephant and camels with the first 2 Lithettes at the Audubon Zoo. Good times

Dude, back in the 80s we rode donkeys on the basketball court playing basketball in Jr high for a school function.
Also had traveling diving donkey shows where the electrocuted donkeys making them jump off a diving board into an above ground swimming pool. This is not to be confused with the diving donkey shows that used to be on display on both sides of the Texas / Mexico border. The donkeys in those shows had big ole smiles on their face after performing while the ones who had been in the pool were pretty pissed off after their performance...

The movie Cat People was filmed in the zoo so it captures some of the old zoo scenes.
Filmed in NOLA & outside Slidell
Kinski was virile.
I recall that my eldest kid rode a camel at Audubon Park in 1992.
