I used to have a plastic elephant key from Audubon zoo. The trunk stuck out and you’d put it in a black box in front of different cages and turn the key. A recording would come on and tell you about the animal.
This was in the 1970’s. The movie Cat People was filmed in the zoo so it captures some of the old zoo scenes.

My wife and I took our nieces to Audubon Zoo in the mid eighties.
The girls were 6 and 8. We did ride the elephant.

Yes. there were elephant and camel rides. The gate/landing is still there I think, at the end of the Asia exhibit.

Remember riding them with my kids...I wanted to touch a live elephant for some reason...I remember their hair being like wire....

Yeah, me, my mom, dad, brother and little cousin took my moms 86 Carolla to the Zoo. My little cousin talked shite the while way there and back how he was going to ride to elephants. We get there and he pusses out. We get home and he tells his mom and dad that my mom and dad didnt let him ride it.

I worked weekends at the Zoo as parking security in the mid 80s. I was allowed to ride before Opening.
