Wait, are you insinuating that there is reason to be hopeful that BR will become a thriving city?

No, but it objectively has not been on some steep decline over the years like some are insinuating. Quite the opposite. The flood will set things back, but won't be a death knell. I am a bit apprehensive about Broome, but people thought BR would fall off the map when Kip was elected. So let's just see.

Please continue to try to persuade me that Baton Rouge is the next Austin, TX. Seriously.

Well, I wasn't trying to do that and I don't believe it will ever be like Austin, so I'm not sure what to tell you here. But the bottom line is BR, particularly the heart of the city (Downtown/Mid City), is a far better place to live than it was just some 10-15 years ago.

And for the record, whenever I do settle down I don't intend on raising kids here on account of the terrible public schools. Would love to move to St. Francisville, as my family is originally from there and it's a great place to raise a family.

Is that still the same after the flood?

I mean, don't you think there were businesses outside of LA that were gonna come to BR...that rethought that plan after the flood?

Ruth's Chris HQ never returned to BR

Exactly. comparisons to places like Austin is not going to be worthwhile. But, take the inner 610 loop area of Houston. I look back on it and i think of the dozens of cool museums, the walkable (food, small items, fun inside of residential neighborhoods) areas filled with young families. a grid system for getting around in your car, a linear park several miles long for biking and hanging out with 10s of millions $$ already invested in continual improvements to it. But even if you go to the suburbs there are huge parks and great free public education.
Then I look back at Baton Rouge and draw a blank.

yes. I don't expect to go back to BR unless its for a wedding or a funeral for the rest of my life.

The only redeeming characteristic of BR is LSU, and at this point in my life that isn't enough to warrant a visit.

I think some people there are just stuck there cause all their family still lives there. They don't want to move and be away from family so they stay there and try to justify in their head how wonderful BR is.

But honestly...that can be the case for many cities all over the country. I certainly don't think BR is the worst city in the country or anything.

BR made national news twice due to shootings involving police officers(one where the cops killed someone, the other where cops were the ones killed). That doesn't scream "crime dropping" to me.

so 2 rare circumstances tell you crime is rising? I saw a first 48 a few years back where 4 -5 people were murdered in an apt in Phoenix...i didn't think that was common

All of that is fine, but BR isnt set up to have this. You cant complain about the lack of something when it really isnt feasible. Its like complaining that you never get snow in Key West.

Many different areas are expanding and growing, they just may not be in that cookie cutter neighborhood thats spread out over a vast land like Texas.

Not necessarily. Just mainly pointing out from an outsider's standpoint...there isn't much appealing about BR. My husband has never been impressed with BR the times he came with me to visit(he thinks the city is very depressing). It must be telling that anytime there is a thread on this topic...you have SEVERAL posters that used to live in BR that feel the same way.

This board hates to hear it...but outside of the South, I've met several people that don't really have a great impression with Louisiana in general(except for visiting NOLA...which everyone seems to love to visit).

This topic really gets beaten to death on here. I don't understand why people have to keep bringing it up. I live here and love it. Yes, there are some shitty aspects, but all cities have something wrong with them.
If you hate Baton Rouge, don't live here. It's pretty simple. I just don't understand why you constantly have to bitch about it. Why would you think anyone gives a shite about your opinion?

I lived in 3 different states and did move back primarily because of family.

The good: family, friends, food(not just restaurants, but people here know how to cook), and entertainment(enough variety to have fun)
.
The bad: crime and traffic lights

The ugly: road system and conditions, politics and stupid drivers.

BR has the dumbest drivers around- driving in left lanes, no turn signals, on their phones alot and genuinely just don't give a shite about other drivers around them and will move into your lane with the quickness.

I don't hate BR, but don't love it either. I make due with what is good about it and try to stay away from the bad and ugly as much as possible.

I don't care if people give their opinions. I just don't understand how somebody wakes up and thinks "I really hate Baton Rouge. I think I'll start a thread about it." If I hate a place, I try and avoid it.

feel like in recent years it's just gotten worse and worse. every "nice" thing BR pops up with, gets ruined. no development. traffic sucks dick. schools suck. i could go on and on.

Born here as well, but I have lived in several of the nicest cities in the U.S. (Boulder, Albuquerque, cities in CA) And yes we are behind in several areas.

That said, BR has it's fair share of fun things to do and great restaurants, stores, etc. Many of the established neighborhoods here (not the cookie cutter crap) are on par with any city in terms of desirable architecture and other qualities. The city in general has improved significantly over the last 10-15 years in terms of having amenities that larger cities have and that's not even debatable. I think the people here, for the most part, are more genuine, inspiring and ready to interact than anywhere else I've been. There is a quirky quality, having grown up here, that I honestly miss very much when I have moved away for long periods. I always miss the humidity or the thunderstorms for some insane reason.

I imagine that most people who "hate" it here and can't find something nice to say about it just have an itch to be somewhere else or just generally suck at life.
