Yes, get a box with a group and be prepared to spend $15k. If you want to run on top of port o lets and have beer cans thrown at you, go to the Preakness and save money.

I did this a few years ago on a Bachelor party. I was doing the throwing.
The infield was a mud pit, but we got to see that replacement horse win.

Go at least twice in your life
First, when you are young and do the infield. A stranger picture in time of the youth in America will not be found.
Second, when you are old and can go first class.
Some thoughts ...
When I wore a younger mans clothes, you could find me in the boxes at the finish line on the 3rd floor. Got you outdoors and right in the action.
Locals used to go the day before to avoid the crowds, and watch the Ladies big race, Now I think they go on Thursday.
A local youth from my youth made good and he wrote about it, well worth the read. Background courtesy of Wik. For article, mash here. A dad gum novel by todays Twatter set, but a primer to the crazies you used to encounter.
Personally I could spend the day in the parking lot where the real money folks have their personal cars and their personal drivers. In my youth I would spend the day on the other side of the track with some of the best collection of black and white gypsies to spend time with. That changed in the 80's when the native Mericans thought those jobs beneath them and the Brown Mafia took over.
Avoid the Mint Juliep they serve today, it is a grotesque zombie of the actual drink and the souvenir glass they sell it in now is easier to shatter (probably comes from China now and full of lead).
Check it off your Bucket List and get as much of the experience as you can.
Enjoy

I miss those days, probably last in seen in the 50's and 60's
Best Derby parties were in Lexington, then the Double Mint Twins took the next generation to Louisville. They should be fossils like me so not sure if that is still the "hot" party in town.

Not sure what Derby Week is like, but if you want the taste closer to the original Kentucky Fried Chicken, this is well worth the trip.
Have not been there since c19, but was awesome before.

Fri night, go to the galt house bar... u will see many insiders and sports/ celebrity types. It will be 3 deep trying to get a drink. & its not fancy. Ubers/Taxi's will completely rape u for rides. typical 3 mile drop off, $100 min

I have been once back when it was still a gentile social event. Now the poors have made it a drunk fest and I have no interest of going again.

Good luck. It will be a zoo. Churchill Downs is large, but it's got neighborhoods all around it, so there are no open spaces except the track.

About 25 years ago I was building playgrounds for Mc Donalds. We were in Kentucky at the time of the derby.
The owner of the Mickey D’s asked us if we wanted tickets. We took them and went.
Infield tickets. Was basically a talladega nascar crowd. Running across port- a- cans. Good party.
I watch now and that’s not the party I remember at all. Maybe they cleaned it up a lot in the infield.

Get ready to wait in line for drinks and food. They are pricing the regular folks out. It's nothing but a corporate event. Its all inclusive, but the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I go to Keeneland for Oaks and Derby. They at least want you there, unlike Churchill.

About 20 years ago. I was a guest of Hermes.
If you go, try to be the guest of someone cool.

No. But in Houston we had a Derby Party and decided it would start with a tasting of different Mint Julips because my mint patch had come into its own. I do not remember watching horses that day, but lots and lots of laughter and good friends.

The good news is after you get drunk at the track, you can just walk across the street in any direction and score some ghetto crack to sober up with.
