$600 coup, plus $20ish each for grown egg laying chicken plus $40 of feed every few months.

Eggs = $3.50 a dozen from Walmart.

You will need to use about 2,300 eggs before you ever break even. Not to mention the work involved in cleaning up after them. Chickens are a filthy animal.

I have an aunt who has chickens and goats. And its funny to see a few of the chickens and goats interact.

Some of the chickens have no problem being around humans and then there are a few that like to sort of be on their own.

Like I said above, she has a rooster and that son of a bitch is aggressive as hell. I hate that bastard. I've been around rosters before, but always on the other side of the pen, but this one is the only one I ever been in a pen with. There are certain spots, for some reason, he doesn't like anyone to be around.

The only problem she has had was with coyotes. She thought she had her pen secure enough, but one night a coyote got in. They heard the noise and it got to a few chickens by the time they got out there. But they do attract predators.

We have a pool, do you think that would be a problem? I have no idea if chickens can swim or not.

Your issue isn't can chickens swim, it's do you want to step on chicken shite while barefoot and poolside.

Everything that walks, crawls, slithers, or flies eats chicken.
Chickens also consume more water than you think they do.

Chicken joke: Why does a chicken coop have two doors?

Because if it had four doors, it would be a chicken sedan!

That’s fricked up. This is why no one likes you.

I’m thinking maybe 3 to start

If you think you’ll want more, get more to start. Chickens have a pecking order(quite literally) and will bully new chickens, often to death. Because of this, you’ll want to start with as many as you’ll ultimately want.

I used to live on 22 acres and had free range chickens. I raised meat broilers as well as a mixed assortment of egg layers. They were entertaining and a lot of fun to have around. I let mine free range from morning until night(they will always return to their coop when the sun starts to set).

I can attest first hand to the fact that chickens can swim. Never thought I’d need to have that information, but 20 years later, here we are.

Heinrich Himmler once raised chickens.

Warning: Your husband may become a genocidal maniac if he starts raising chickens.

Been raising chickens for 8 years now. I started with 3 and it became 30 over a few years and now back down to 8-10 chickens. No one needs more than 6-8 hens for two families to eat endless eggs. I have made it a hands free operation during these years of trial and error. The coop and chicken run are completely fenced (sides and top)with 2x4 studs and hardware cloth. The hardware cloth extends into the dirt 10" so fox/raccoons/coyote cant burrow in and hardware cloth keeps snakes and other birds out. I fill a 5' tall 3" PVC pipe full of pellets once a week and use a 50 gallon plastic tank with pvc spout and chicken nipples for water. I fill the feed tube and check water on Sundays ONLY. I get eggs every other day from a hinged nest box that I access from outside the coup/run. Its an easy operation that takes minimal effort. Eventhough the run is 16'x10' I do let them free range some weekends but you will lose chickens from time to time even with dogs and etc. Typically its hawks or fox that get them but a big raccoon will wreck havoc too.

My exact setup also.

My coop and run is pretty secure, but I let them free range. A red-tail hawk tried to get one last week and I was only 5 feet away when it happened.

As far as roosters, I have buff orpingtons. Probably the most docile breed you can get. My big rooster likes to be petted like a dog, but he's always on watch for predators. Hens peck around, oblivious to their surroundings, while the rooster is constantly scanning the the sky and the general area. If roosters are allowed in your area, I highly recommend one if you are going to free range.

I won't argue with your math, but I don't get the impression the OP is doing this as an investment and looking for a good ROI. I see it as a hobby, spending discretionary income.

The guy that fishes spends whatever on a boat, trailer, motor, license, lures, clothes, a camp maybe, he's not doing it for an investment, but a hobby. He'll never get his money back.

My hobbies include film photography. And I don't get any ROI. But I enjoy it.

To each his own and if the OP wants to raise chickens, God bless and enjoy.

This is definitely going to be a pet scenario.

Apparently they sell chicken diapers if you want your chickens to hang out inside.

Ordinances: Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, LA

Sec. 14:224. - Chickens, other fowls, and birds.

(a)

The keeping of more than three (3) chickens within a recognized residential subdivision on a lot of less than one (1) acre is prohibited.

There is no chicken police. If your neighbors dont complain, youll be fine.

Chickens are fun- but they do not like going down water slides, so they may not like swimming in the pool.
