Rottweiler
The pros:
Huge
Will eat spilled food off the floor
Can remove flesh from bone
Extremely loyal to the kids
The cons:
Will attempt to depose you as family alpha...
Usually once every 2-3 months
Will go to your bed while you're in the shower and lay his head on your pillow then stare at you when you return
They're stanky
Will knock over your beer, because it knows it gets to eat anything on the floor
Will learn to open a refrigerator to grab beer on accessible shelves.
If it is a can it will bite the beer can and drink it as it sprays out
If it is a bottle it will toss it around in hopes it will break.
Can enter a neighbors home in an apartment if the walls are made with dry wall and wood. Only stone and brick stop this advance.
Will lay the HUGEST cable for a dog, competes with Elephant manure piles. No fun shoveling this animal's shite.
Will make sexual advances on human females.
I highly recommend the shepherd
RIP Mufasa...I still love you, bud.

Ok I guess I overstated on the trips. I’m really only talking about 4 or 5 trips a year with a couple of those only being like 3-5 days. Seems like a lot for me but prob not on the OT. We both work here full time and would be home most of the time we’re not working. I prob should have omitted the trips part. My B

I’ve only ever had small dogs that were loud and aggressive but not intimidating or big scary looking animals that were giant cowards.

I would plan for this to be mostly an outside dog that we’d allow inside here and there.
That’s not the best idea imo
Too easy for dog to get stolen or loose
Had one in our neighborhood last week that was out with lead still attached to collar, it freaked with fireworks & bolted

I had a Chihuahua that no one would frick with.
My wife has a Chihuahua/Maltese mix. She fears nothing. One of our neighbors was walking their German Shepherd around our Cul-de-sac not long ago when my wife had Millie outside. Millie tore off after the German Shepherd and chased it all around until they could get both dogs corralled. One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen was this little ankle biter chasing a big German Shepherd.
The only thing keeping her from being a straight up killer is the fact she weighs about 7 lbs.
This is her, her name is Mildred. But everyone calls her Millie.

I have an old lab/akita mix. He's been pretty intimidating. I lived on Gardere and never got broken in to.

He aint wrong. As a former Military Working Dog Handler I can attest that most handlers would vote this breed the top choice. Fur missiles with teeth. I never handled one but I have caught plenty on the gauntlet during training. Great bite and they are super quick. Less medical issues than most breeds. They are a bit spastic though.

The only breed of dog I've owned has been Boxers. Owning a male/female pair for 9 years.
They are great with kids/family. Usually weigh 55-70 lbs.
Always served me well.
They aren't vicious, but usually people are intimidated due to their musclarity and its protectiveness of the family and home. IMHO

I live in this hellhole as well and will be gone within a few months for good. Hope you have standby generator or battery powered security as the recent home-breakins are with thieves pulling the meters and disconnecting generators.

My step dad was a WWII K-9 corp veteran. We had very well trained Shepherds and Shepherd mixes growing up. The very best was 1/2 German Shepherd and 1/2 wolf. He was a sweet cuddly fur ball until he wasn't.

You really just need an alert dog with a badass sounding bark.
My lab wouldnt hurt anyone but when people are outside, her bark is deep and loud. Any potential burglar would hear it and move to another house.

Trust me once my step kids are outta the house I plan to. We’re a week on/week off with them and it’s part of the divorce agreement so we stuck for about 6-7 more years.

I have a pair of well-trained Belgian Malinois.

Honestly any dog that barks is a good guard dog. You don’t need a man killer, just enough to make noise when someone is on the prowl. I would think a loud bark is probably better than a soft one, though.

Malinois or Dutch Shepherd...have lots of toys and balls on hand, a big yard and accept him into your home as a part of the family/pack...allow him to sleep on kids beds, etc.

I've had several that you have listed.... look up Dutch shepherd. A pretty bad arse but loving dog
