Any O-T Pilots Care to Share what it's Like to Fly a Plane?

I'm at PDX watching planes fly by, wasting time for a few more hours. It looks effortless, landing after landing, take off after another. What is it like flying an airliner? a plane of any type? Helicopters?

Flying rotary is like balancing a broomstick on one hand while roller skating on ice after drinking a fifth of Jack. At least that is how it was for me.
Flying small fixed wing is relatively easy. Never flew anything larger than a P-Navajo, so will defer to the big guns on larger craft.

It's like driving a car in the sky.

Not so bad after the fourth or fifth Jack and Coke.

I have a friend who's a retired Marine fighter pilot who now flies as a Senior Pilot for American Airlines.
He says he's now a bus driver.

Will put you on cloud 9...
...or 10, whichever you prefer.

It's a lot easier when the passengers stop screaming

Sounds more difficult than it should be, in 2017 at least.

If I could do life over again, I'd try to become a pilot. I guess I'm still young enough to do so. Would take a lot of time and energy to go that route though.

Never flew anything bigger than a Turbo Commander, but I love to fly. I lost a little interest after getting my instrument rating so I kind of got away from it and decided I didn't want to do it for a living (which I regret).
But it really is one of the greatest things. I trained in a 172 and the basics aren't really hard. I soloed after 6 hours. I got my private in Gonzales and the flight back home after that accomplishment was one of the greatest feelings of my life.

Don't ask David Lockard:
The plane that crashed into Lake D'Arbonne Sunday afternoon was removed from the lake early Tuesday.
David Lockard, 73, of Monroe died following the crash. No one else was on board the plane, which departed from the Union Parish Airport in Farmerville on Sunday.

Hours and hours of boredom and a few moments of stark terror.

I have been at the stick of several different fixed wings including a G6 and had no issues.
Ten minutes trying to fly a helicopter (very unsuccessfully) resulted in my only ever air sickness episode. I am in awe of guys who can fly those damn contraptions.

Is there a general consensus as to which single engine piston driven plane is the most dangerous?

I flew a plane once, in boyscouts. Got my aviation merit badge.
It was awesome, a plane a little bigger than a cessna, i felt like i ruled the world.
That was before i had my drivers license, however, and when i started driving i had the same feeling.

I have a friend that is a flight instructor and he let me fly a Cessna one time. It was fun but also kinda scary. Those things are rickety as hell. The one we flew was old as shite too, I think he said it was built in the 70's. I was shocked at hell at how thin the doors were and the windows rolled down like a 1979's Cutless Supreme.

Yep. Lots of them were built in the 50's and 60's and still flying. I learned to fly in an early 1960's era Cessna.
