I guess it’s been around a long time. Originated from the Pacific Islands as a plant based social ritual. Their version of smashing a few beers at the bar.

There’s been a lot of Kava bars pop up around the country. Euphorbia in NOLA, etc.

Just got my first order to give it a go. Not mind blowing, but interesting stuff nonetheless.

It's really hard on the liver. Not a great replacement for alcohol because of that. It's pretty mellow but I'd rather have a small puff of indica and not worry about my liver.

I’ve done a pretty good amount of reading it seems like the liver toxicity story is way overblown.

I’ll link a few research articles if I get a chance to find them.

About 15 years ago a kava bar (really a hole in the wall, some bamboo and rattan furniture and lava lamps) opened a block from the beach. Still there, but not sure who the patrons are. Read a book one time by a young World Bank, American CIA operative called Getting Stoned with Savages which does a good job explaining kava.

I don’t often use Kava, but this is not accurate, and is based off a media scare years ago that turned out to have no real basis in fact.

The more you use it, the better it can get, especially with the top-shelf kava.

20 years ago I drank kava for a few hours in a hut in Fiji with some locals and got absolutely nothing out of it. No mellow feeling, no buzz or high, nothing. I had built up a fair tolerance to alcohol and drugs, so maybe that was why.

I enjoy kava on occasion. It’s affect is more kike “the flip side to coffee” than it is to weed or alcohol IMO. But it’s not necessarily seadtive, just sort of a relaxing calmness.

Damn I could use some now actually.

Had some at the resort for honeymoon in Fiji. Not sure how that compares to what they would serve here. Gives you kind of a giddy feeling. Definitely different from being buzzed, drunk

It gives off hippy vibes so I avoid it.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've always thought this was referring to a bar that mostly serves the sparkling wine from Spain.

It sounds like a name of a freeze-dried coffee from the early 1970s.

Can you get good kava online? I’d love to see its effects

There was a kava bar here in Austin that recently closed. I went once, paid ~$12 for a drink that didn’t really do anything

I’m surprised no one has brought up Kratom yet. Kratom is the only thing I’ve ever found that truly helps with my nervous gut. One scoop in the morning, another after lunch and it helps me in more ways than I can count. I’m finally a “once a day" shitter instead of a ‘every time I have to make a decision’ shitter. Sad, but true. Also, produces a sense of internal well being that I can’t really describe.

I’m a big fan of Kratom but you have to use moderation. Even if over used though, it only you feel kinda nauceous.

Then don't indulge in it. I know of several people that take it mindfully. Ive read up a lot on it and there are a lot of people that agree with you, I'm not going to dispute your statement and will respect your opinion.

That said, it serves a purpose for many of us. It's been a huge positive for me and I've been taking it for years. I do take breaks from it though. Again, responsibility is key but unlike hydrocodone, more is not better. I don't find myself jonesing for it at all. Just a little uplift to my day.

There’s a subreddit that has done a pretty solid job through the FAQ. Sure.. plenty of folks there just looking for another high but some have done a great job to describe the history, dosage, and reviewed products and companies. Definitely available online.
