Definitely getting a machine. I have a deviated septum and am pretty positive I have sleep apnea based on what girlfriends have told me.

Any recs on a used machine that I can adjust the settings and use the sleep app for less than $500? And my buddy who has a machine said he uses the in nostril set up...are those an option instead of the mask?

One way that I can explain it is that I had forgotten what it was like to go to sleep and wake up 7-8 hours later with a good nights rest. Just wasn't part of my life anymore. Now I feel like a champ in the mornings.

When you have sleep apnea, your body is constantly physically fighting you to get you breathing again when you stop. By gasping, which can cause reflux, or rolling, or muscle contractions, anything to shake the obstruction in your airway loose. This is what is causing the restless night.

And the latest research shows that there is a 95% correlation between snoring and apnea. So if you snore, do a sleep study. Worst that can happen is that you can find out that you are in the 5%.

I have a Philips Respironics 460. You can get a used one from Second Wind CPAP for $299. If you want a humidifier (you don't really need heated in the South) then you can add one for around $50-70.

Then you'll need a hose and mask which you can get new for $100 and up depending on the one you want. I think I pay around $60 for mine.

That's called a nasal pillow or nasal prong. I tried using a nasal pillow and I couldn't get used to it so I went back to nasal mask (completely covers the nose). It's all personal preference.

Here are the different types and you can see about how much they cost: LINK

If you can afford it or insurance will pay for it, that's what I recommend. The sleep study will at least get you set up with a baseline... from there you can tweek your settings.

I gave up on my machine about 6 months ago. This thread inspired me to give it another try. It worked for 4 or 5 hours then i'd wake up with moisure in the mask and felt like i was drowning.

I just ordered a new hose and that mask you guys recommended that has the hose at the top of the head instead front of face. Hope it works better this go around. I'm too young to have these damn problems but i have a 18.5 inch neck.

Do you use a heated humidifier? I do live in the South.

How long do you expect your machine to last you?

You would probably be a better candidate for a dental appliance.

You should notice a difference almost immediately. I think most people I've talked to have said they could tell the first morning they woke up.

I got mine about 3 pm in the afternoon, put it on around 4 to take a quick nap & ease into it... woke up 4 hours later.

Follow the link I posted. You can buy one right at the link. Mine was 475. Now they are 350.

If you can operate a smart phone you can operate the cpap settings.

do you wash out your new hose before wearing it the first time is a decision you will have to make.

Thanks for the help

Just bought this machine: LINK

It was $350 on the secondwind site. No tax/shipping. Came with the heated humidifier.

What next? Do I need to buy the tubes that plug into the mask/pillow/prong? And I sleep on my side...would you recommend the mask/pillow/prong?

I'm glad you are pleased with your purchase but I want to make sure you realize you can follow the link in my previous post and get a new top of the line machine with everything included but the mask (heated hose, SD card) for 350 shipped from Amazon. Just a heads up.

Yes... and since you got one with a heated humidifier you're gonna need a hose for that. I'm not too familiar with them bc I don't have a heated humidifier.

You're going to need a hose like this: LINK

I sleep mostly on my back and sometimes slightly on my side. I have no problems with a nasal mask although I sometimes have to adjust my pillow a little when on my side.

I tried a nasal pillow type once and didn't like it... but lots of others like them.

Checked it out, but I could only find it for $400 via that link. The machine I ordered has everything I need with a two year warranty. Can't pass that up, thanks though.

Any recs on a mask for a mouth breather/side sleeper? I'm looking at the quattro full face CPAP mask. LINK
