Good man
I did the same thing with my first coin. Most do. Old stuff needs to look old; guns, coins, etc.

This is a cool frickin' nickel because it inspired a family history lesson. We learned that coin-operated machines were becoming popular then. It could have been exchanged for a loaf of bread or a an ice cream soda. Neat!

Just found a Spanish Real from tge 16th or 17th century that my father-in-law gave to my wife a few weeks ago. Sitting on the counter with other change. She didn't know what it was and didn't care. I don't know much either and I don't think it has much value but I sure as hell didn't want to spend it like it was a dime.

Your version and military version of coin collecting is COMPLETELY different. Military collecting almost shows a history of what ships you've visited or who you've met. I think I'm up to about 40 or 50 from various places and people

The honest answer is dont clean it. Most collectors want the age to show. Those old coins look better with the black silver contrast. However... if you dont give a damn about that and you dont care about ruining a collectable coin... Baking soda, a little water and a toothbrush after soaking it in lemonjuice overnight.
This.
Honor the coin for what it is and keep it in the condition it was when you found it.

Yeah I noticed right away it was different. At first I thought it was Canadian but said nothing. When the customer left, I examined it and quickly exchanged it for a boring new nickel.

Good news- I took it out of the soapy water, rinsed and gently dried it off. It looks exactly the same. Good thing we didn't use toothpaste or other chemicals before consulting OT.

so you stole it
Of course not. I exchanged it for a brand new nickel. Finders keepers, fair and square, etc.

quote:Correct, except for Roman coins. I always clean those when I get them. Usually use just some warm, soapy water to do the trick.
Cleaning coins ruins collectibility.

I don't know any other bubbleheads on here. Never served with any that would be on this board

I have a frick ton of pennies. Some probably have been in some butts and vaginas so they have a story to tell.
Don't worry, didn't clean them.

My grandfather had the entire V nickel set except the 1913. There's only five known 1913 V Nickels in existence.
Here's a picture of all five-
As you can tell from how nice all five look, they didn't circulate which leads many to think that someone(s) at the mint surreptitiously made them and held on to them until the dust settled. A 1913 nickel is worth more than $3 Million today
