Carvana will also be significantly more expensive than a traditional dealer. They're not going to make it, their stock is shorted something like 70-80%.

Also, interestingly, the Auto Nation annual report says their average net income on a new vehicle is about $1,700 (net of all costs) and about $3,600 average per used car. Car sales, new and used, comprise only about 20% of their net income. The balance comes from finance (the leader at 40%+), followed by parts and service. Most of the $1,700 came from volume incentives, not per car profit.

Auto Nation is the largest publicly traded auto dealer, so I imagine the regional dealers don't do as well, given their inefficiencies of scale.

Do you know what the rebates/invoice are on that particular vehicle?

So every time you thought you were awesome at negotiating, and bragged about how much you got them to drop the price, the dealership made a very good dollar amount on you. You just screwed a working man from earning a little money, aka the salesman.

Good. Name one positive a car salesman brings to the table.

I tried my hand at car sales for a bit when I was younger, every single car salesman I worked with was out to find any way possible to screw the customer and the other salesmen. Car salesmen, as a group, are the most conniving, untrustworthy group of people on the planet. The entire system is bent to screw over the customer.

My time is money, so wasting time with dealers is losing money for me.

I never buy MSRP, but I do not try to become an OT legend of car buying either.

No matter what deal you got, someone got one better. Just be happy with your purchase and move on in life.

Calling for a car salesman on a public forum is like saying Beetlejuice three times.

This. I'm in upper management in the car business....find a car that you like and go buy it for a price that you think is fair. Who freakin' cares if the dealer made a little money off of you.

You don't go buy a $90 polo shirt and not expect 5 different people to make a profit on your purchase.

The average gross profit on a car at our dealership is around $2400 a car. We're a for profit organization. Making roughly 10% profit per car should not be considered a terrible thing. Hell that's probably one of the least profit margins of any industry on the planet. I never understood why people can't understand this.

Unfortunately, some people just have to feel like they won, which is what happens more times than not with an upset customer for any variety of reasons...

Yes they can lose money on a car but they can make it up if they hit certain company sales goals

Wish buying a vehicle was like the model Scion had for a bit. Pure pricing i think it was called. Simplified the whole mess. Car was X amount of dollars. No haggling because it was X amount of dollars at EVERY dealership.

I want you to make a fair profit. However, your system of sales ensures that some will pay more than others. You take advantage of the weak.

So, car salesman are a bunch of rotten, lying, mother frickers I have zero respect for. Because their line of bull shite proves they have no respect for me.

I think RE agents are worse. They actively collude with each other when a bid/interest in a house has been expressed to maximize their commission. Nobody is monitoring their communications. Also 6% on people’s largest asset is absurd.

It's the business model of your industry to blame. If manufacturers were allowed to sell directly to the public, not only would profit rise, but cost to the consumer would go down as well.

The whole dealer business model reminds me of the mafia taking a peice of everyone's profits for "protection."

You act like you aren’t in one of the shadiest retail businesses in the world. Don’t operate a business with a negotiable price if you can’t handle it

The buyer is a working man too.

Do the salesmen ever feel bad for screwing over the working-man customer? Hell no. They're high fiving about it.
