My Grandmother passed suddenly and while I was home for the funeral I really began to wonder why I was willing to be away from all I knew and loved. I used that road running in the other direction and came home.
Tough decision when you have a lot of family in La. You will only have one family and when they are gone you will realize you spend a lot of your free time hanging out with strangers and coworkers instead of being there for them. Once you start your grind with a job, wife, kids, and home upkeep you really don’t have much free time anyways. You can always visit California, NYC, Chicago, and Miami. That is what vacations are for.

quote:Lifelong NOLA people, my wife, 3 toddler kids and I moved away to the Midwest in 1984. Career decision. This was pre-email, FB, Skype and FaceTime days, when long distance calls were pricey. Snail mail was mostly it. So... first two years racked with homesick blues and culture shock. One funny thing - we had no idea that public restrooms, even in gas stations, could be nearly spotlessly clean all the time.
Give it 2 years and you will never move back. It took 3 trips home before the roads and general ignorance became too obvious to ignore. You can’t unsee it once you realize the difference.
Then during one of our semi annual trips home, we started to realize how dirty our home city is, how much complacency and militant ignorance was rooted there, how corrupt and ineffective the govt was, how god awful bad the schools were, how expensive real estate was, how crime was rising, and how glad we weren’t raising our family there.
We’ve since moved back into the Southeast, but as retirement approaches have made the mutual decision to not move back and get restuck in that rut we broke out of. Besides we can still come home for visits, anytime we need a family fix, or crave the place for foodie or other nostalgic reasons.

You’re thinking of Vermont.
Ohio is the white trash version of Vermont. So you’re spot on, just add meth and some pills to your scene.

look up Teets Food Store out of Ville Platte, LA. They'll deliver all the smoked meats you want(you won't be disappointed) and go ahead and enjoy your time away from home.
Sounds like you landed a great job, you can just fly back occasionally and it gives your family a reason to travel/visit.

And in most places, the housing stock is shite( nothing of any architectural significance, just track housing, mcmansions and strip malls as far as the eye can see)
It's okay if you're a homer. Love where you live, but to say every other place sucks, then you have some serious blinders on.
There are tons of friendly people in other parts of the country. Cajun/Creole isn't the only type of food in this world. Every place has celebrations and festivals unique to their background. Fishing might not be as good in Nebraska, but there are tons of places in the country where one can fish with ease. And the housing, let's see. I just picked a random street. You can do the same and find similar: Such character

I moved to Indiana straight out of college and couldn't wait to get back to LA. I have a big family that I love dearly and want to be close too. I made it about a year with the new job in Indiana and decided to come back. LA has it flaws but it's about making the best out of what you have. I love to fish and be in the outdoors and LA is world class in that aspect.

What was your transition like?
Like immigrating to the USA from a third-world country. It was fantastic - professionally and personally.
Left nearly 23 years ago and have had a wonderful life I couldn't have created or even imagined had I stayed in Louisiana.
There are many fine people in Louisiana but the state has been and still is at or near the bottom of the barrel in terms of places in the United States to build a career and a life.
Your family and friends are only a plane ride away to visit.
Good luck to you!

I grew up a couple cities over from Mayfield Heights/Village area, in Cleveland Heights. The eastern suburbs are very nice, especially in terms of housing costs and amenities. There is tons of good shopping/restaurants, etc nearby especially at Beachwood Place/Legacy Village, you are close to the Metro Parks and tons of good public golf if you are into it (Way better golf than Louisiana could dream of). Only about 20 minutes from downtown Cleveland too. Cleveland doesn't have anywhere near the traffic issues that Nola/BTR have.
Be glad you are going to the east side, much more of a neighborhood feel than the cookie cutter west side.
But yes, the winters do suck.

I was in Hammond, IN 2 weeks ago. Thats the town that A Christmas Story was based off. It made southern white trash look classy.

Moved to Houston about 6 years ago. Miss family, friends and the food. Love to visit LA but the quality of life here so much better. Tons of concerts to pick from which I go to many and much better golfing courses. Plus it's hot as hell here but rains so much less the LA. Have been rained on three times while playing golf! Still go back to LA to fish in the marsh with friends and visit but won't be going back after I retire!

Agreed. If you love Louisiana, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. More power to you.
But to say everywhere else in the country sucks is just asinine.
