The hottest temperature ever recorded in Antartica was measured on Thursday at a remote station on the continent's northern tip, scientists said. The temperature was nearly 65 degrees at Argentina's Esperanza research station, scientists from the country's meteorological agency said. That surpassed the previous record of 63.5 degrees set March 24, 2015, at the same location.

This means that the temperature at Esperanza was practically identical to what was felt Thursday afternoon in San Diego. To be fair, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. But it's not typical that the temperatures in Antarctica — one of the coldest places on Earth — are nearly the same as those in Southern California.

quote:

The Antarctic peninsula where the record-breaking temperature was measured is one of the fastest-warming places on earth, with temperatures rising nearly 5.4 degrees in just the last 50 years, according to the WMO. Studies have shown that many of Antarctica's massive glaciers are melting rapidly due to global warming. All told, Antarctica's ice sheet contains enough water to raise global sea levels by nearly 200 feet, the WMO says.

If you’re located near the South Pole isn’t every direction “north”?

At the South Pole yes.

Maybe they meant, "the most northern" point?

How significant are temperature measurements that cover .000002% of Earth's history?

Serious question. How much do you take from that?

Are you aware of just exactly how long the earth has been in existence?

Let me put it another way...say you’re 5 miles from the South Pole and someone points you toward the South Pole and says, “Start walking straight for 5 miles and don’t turn.”

Doesn’t that mean you’re walking south no matter in which direction you’re 5 miles away from the South Pole?

And if you’re walking straight south to get to the South Pole, doesn’t that mean your back is facing north? You can’t be walking south and your back is facing east, can it?

This is some heavy science shite we’re dealing with here!

Just think of all those poor polar bears...

I know, I know, there are no polar bears in Antarctica. After all, I’ve been there...

Unless you give Democrats more money. Because after all, their elections run so smoothly, why not let them see if they are smart enough to literally change the weather.

Highest sea ice levels in satellite history in Antarctica were recorded in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
