So that's where my Amazon package went
Apparently this has been a thing for a while now. Here's a video (youtube) of a train being looted in 2020 in Chicago.

Video footage captured thousands of empty and damages packages lined around the tracks of a Los Angeles railway in the midst of cargo looting crimes
Thieves have been targeting cargo containers traveling in trains in LA and stealing valuable goods from companies such as Amazon and UPS
As a result, they have left empty boxes scattered along the tracks as well as leaving behind dispensable products such as unused COVID tests and epi pens
Union Pacific have since begun cracking down on security measures in an attempt to decrease the cargo looting trend

That's pretty entrepreneurial.
If you wait till the stuff get to retail it's way more expensive and un-bulked boxing.
Way more efficient at the wholesale level.
IMO, evidence these cats DO go to college.

July 2021 Train leaving LA
Look at the containers they are hitting. These aren't packages I see instead several are big screen TVs and furniture. Looks like they are selectively picking the correct containers to hit in an very organized manner.
