they work if properly fit and not touched at all when it's worn. Two things not may people do.
the rest are just for making the wearer feel good they are doing something. the vast majority of masks out there are doing very little.
It's like wearing condom that you know has a hole in it and thinking it's mostly effective.

They "prove" that N95 masks work better at reducing infections in the wearer, not anyone else.
We are being sold on masks not working for you, but keeping others "safe." N95s don't do that, especially considering most of the N95 masks I've seen out in the wild have a one way valve allowing you to exhale easily.

Other masks...only in a limited capacity (maybe). The “facts” I have seen are based on anecdotal observations such as “Muh, Tokyo!, Muh Hong Kong!, Muh South Korea!” When I bring up that they all have had issues with viral contagions in the past, and that the population may have antibodies due to prior exposure to previous viral related events, the response is....

The masks work for me because they shut the stupid people up. That’s where I draw the line, I’ll give in a little if they give in and let life move on mostly normally outside of masks.
