BATON ROUGE - A police officer was reportedly involved in a crash while escorting a funeral service in Baton Rouge late Thursday morning.

The crash was reported shortly before noon near the intersection of Florida Boulevard and Cora Drive. According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the officer was struck at the intersection by a vehicle turning off Florida Boulevard.

BRPD said the officer's injuries appeared to be non-life-threatening.

It's unclear at this time if anyone will be cited in the crash.

It's past time to end this shite. Two crashes in less than two months. Thank God this officer is not seriously injured.

I still don’t understand why funeral processions need police escorts to speed through red lights. It’s not like the deceased is in a hurry

What is the point of using LE MCs anymore?

If these guys wreck, they obviously have a higher chance of being seriously injured or God Forbid, worse....

Just seems like in these times when roads have more car traffic than ever before, this would be an unnecessary risk.....

Well about 80 years ago, people got sick and tired of deceased persons as being referred to as late.

Like the “late Dylan Mckay”. (RIP)

Now they get cops to hurry you along AND as a well deserved bonus when you die, they let you run all the red lights.

We had two BRPD motorcycle officers injured in crashes in 2018, one seriously and he is still recovering, I believe.

It wasn't that long ago that Cpl. Metternich died while on his motorcycle.

Of the 21 BRPD line of duty deaths, 25% have been due to motorcycle crashes. That is second most only to gunfire.

Maybe they need to recruit MC members to teach them how to ride those hogs.

Is there a certain reason why motorcycles are still used? One more important than having injuries to officers?

They do it to keep the "caravan" together. I'm glad they do. At my mom's funeral there were about 50 cars in the caravan. From the funeral home to the cemetery we probably went thru at least 10 redlights. Hopefully you get the picture.

I've been near the front in a funeral procession that was escorted by MC officers, and I was appalled at how dangerously they drove. I was a nervous wreck the whole time. They put themselves & the general public at risk in several instances. Them getting in accidents isn't the least bit surprising, unfortunately.

This. People have GPS in their car or phone and should be able to find the church on their own.

It's time to stop putting all drivers at risk for a ceremony.

I believe this is the biggest factor. I see some creepy-arse driving in this damn town. Every day.

I question whether half of the drivers on Airline actually possess a legal DL....

Update: The officer just rode the bike away from the scene, looks like it was a close call and he'll be okay.
