Guess he does soccer too or something because he said App State were ready for the play GSU ran. He didn't say the AppState defenders were ready, just AppState were ready.
Saying "AppState was ready" makes me think of a whole team being ready together. Saying "AppState were ready" makes me think of guys in shorts and tee shirts running aimlessly up and down the field.
I always thought the soccer announcers saying a team "are doing this or that" had something to do with national teams. I've never watched anything but Olympic and World Cup soccer. Do they say "Arsenal are on the field now" when the team comes out? Is this a British thing?
I'd never heard this said during an American Football game before.

Most English speaking countries do it that way. It's not specific to any sport.

What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here?

Get a life, nerd. Stop over analyzing a football commentator's wording.
