Nah now that they're in power they've decided they like a strong central government after all.

Jackson's hatred of South Carolina secessionists was largely a projection of his disdain for Calhoun as a result of his wife's involvement in the Eaton affair.

Calhoun's Exposition and Protest, which was the intellectual basis for South Carolina's support for nullification, was simply a recitation of the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which were written by Jefferson and Madison.

The compact theory makes sense. To deny it means one has to believe that the ratifiers willingly signed a document so permanent and irrevocable it could not be revoked even through democratic means.

That’s funny, we will never succeed. We will restore our country to what it’s supposed to be after you leftist nuts have tried to destroy it.

What did Obama say? Weird, hmmmm, I can’t remember the words he used concerning what he was going to do to this country. I’m sure you remember exactly what he said, help me out here you little twink. What did he say?

Honestly, that’s exactly where he fricked up, and fricked up badly because your leftist shite is done forever in this country

Yeah, that's super sane and reasonable. You're in this government and we are all about freedom but you can never ever leave or we'll kill you.

If your mind can fathom it, take slavery out of the analysis. Their position is that you can never leave no matter what war they start or what taxes they levy or what laws they pass. It's illegal for people who never signed up for the deal to leave. I'm not even opposed to rule of the powerful, but the hypocrisy is just too rich for me.

No, it didn't. First of all, the "South" didn't secede as a block, first was to secede was South Carolina on December 20, 1860. What event precipitated that action?

What was the election of Republican Abraham Lincoln, Alex?

This. The Democrats make the Nazis look like amateurs over their history. They are up there with the CCP in terms of immiserating humanity over almost 200 years. The party of slavery, Jim Crow, Japanese Internment. The list goes on. If the press had any sense of shame, this party would have died in the Civil Rights Era.

Exactly so. Lincoln was elected on the Republican ticket on November 6, 1860.

Do you know how many votes the Republican party got in 1860 in:
Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Georgia
Louisiana
Mississippi
North Carolina
South Carolina
Tennessee
Texas

...combined?

Zero votes. Those states didn't even allow a Republican ticket on their ballots.

Do you know why?

The “Republican” and “Democratic” parties in 1860 are not even remotely comparable to the parties today.

In the same way, they can vote to secede, no?

Not really. The dems are still obsessed with racial politics and nullifying federal law whenever a Republican wins.

Although President Jackson owed his election to the presidency to southern slaveholder votes,

That is not true. Jackson was a staunch Democrat and wealthy Southern slaveowners were National Republicans and later, Whigs. Jackson’s support came from dirt farmers who virtually owned no slaves and raised food crops.

The Union should be glad as well. You willing to roll the dice that Jackson would have exhibited the same patient and steady approach to fighting a Civil War as Lincoln did?

Who knows how things would have turned out. If Lincoln had been too hard on the south following the war, there is no way of knowing what would have followed.

Correct. The pre-civil right era Democratic Party was evil and should’ve ended. Instead it became the modern Republican Party. Which a lot of people on here actually support.

The Denocratic and Republican parties inverted positions during the civil rights era. How do you not know this?
