I think Tree Huggers (-2) is more appropriate.

The protesters, who were opposed to a controversial mining contract, had blocked the Pan-American Highway in Chame, 51 miles from the capital Panama City.
Doesn't seem like a climate protest at all.
Not that that'll matter to many of the posters here.
Reuters link about the mine in question - it's got nothing to do with climate protest
As a matter of fact, given the general attitude around here towards EVs, you'd think that y'all would be supporting the protesters.

he $10-billion copper mine produces a critical metal for production of electric vehicles.
quote:
The dispute dates back to 2017 when Panama's top court deemed unconstitutional the law under which First Quantum was operating the mine.
First Quantum inherited the contract after it replaced Petaquilla Gold as operator of the mine in 2013.
Challenges against the court's decision were rejected and the ruling was upheld in 2021, forcing the company to start negotiations for a fresh deal with the government.
quote:
The protesters say the contract is overly generous to the Canadian miner and allege corruption. They also argue the mine poses environmental risks and demand the annulment of the contract and a ban on all new mining projects.
So, not climate protesters, regardless of the OPs title.

Wait, you think environment = climate?

Teaching and construction unions led calls against the contract with environmentalists, saying continued development threatens forested land and crucial groundwater just 120 kilometers (75 miles) west of the capital, in the state of Colon.

I'm hoping for a follow up story on how traffic is flowing normally and businesses and schools are back to normal activities.

before walking off and removing tree trunks that had been blocking the road. He was then arrested.
If the cops removed the illegal blockade it could have settled shite down.

Probably should have just gotten the frick out the way.
What’s the point of antagonizing the guy with the gun?

It's not a climate related protest. They're talking about environmental damage from the mine itself.

Not climate protesters. Misleading title.

The issue is the road blockage.
These tactics are not supported by the public anywhere.
Clearly, this Panamanian man had enough.
I’m surprised this hasn’t happened to the stop oil assholes yet.

On a related note, how many stories do we need to see about elderly men who shoot people. It’s probably a good idea to take a man who knows he’s at the end of the road and who has a gun very seriously.

Is jury nullification a thing in Panama? Seems like the perfect use case.
