A good buddy of mine here committed suicide a year ago today.
So sad, and you never see it coming.

My dad committed suicide in 2010. He was a Vietnam veteran and carried that with him for 40
Years. He was in a support group with other vets at the VA but that obviously wasn’t enough. I’ll live with what I saw that night for the rest of my life.
Prayers to struggling people with PTSD. It is a real disease with catastrophic consequences.

May your dad rest in peace and I hope he has finally found the peace that he was searching for in this world.

Every few weeks she has posted an update. Yes, it was suicide. Yes, he had PTSD. Apparently they had recently separated, mainly due to his violent temper, drinking, and him not dealing with his PTSD issues. One night, they were both talking in their bedroom (he had moved out but had come back to visit / talk), an argument ensued, he stands up, takes out a gun, and shoots himself. In front of her, with the kids at home.
Maybe she did it.

lmost 10 years ago when we last had a thread that discussed military suicides I did some digging. From 2001 to 2011, the suicide rates from military and civilians was fairly even in growth (both almost doubled).
The rise in suicides is not a military issue. It is a mental health issue both inside and outside of the military.
A lot of wisdom, it is not just a military issue. The 22 Vets a day stat is not accurate, the average age of vets in that study was age 60, with many being elderly and suffering from numerous age-related health issues. LINK
I'm retired with over 31 years of service and have only personally known one other military member that committed suicide (we believe it was civilian job related and he was a weird cat).
Many military members, even those who deploy a lot, are never close to combat, although some claim PTSD and other ailments in an effort to get VA disability benefits.
I'm all for taking care of vets with combat-related issues (either physical or mental), but the VA is overrun with those trying to game the system.

That's awful.
And pre-meditated. Sounds like he needed a "push" went there to pick a fight and that sealed it. Thank god he only shot himself. Houston/Katy these frickers kill everybody then themsselves.

My wife has a friend who's husband shot himself in front of her and the kids. The kids called the police and told him they wanted him to get help. Dude waited till the cops knocked on the door then shot himself. His problem wasn't PTSD but drugs/meth.

Sadly, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death.
Not uncommon.
If you ever have any feelings where you want to kill yourself, get help.
Find a way to make it to the next hour. You have reasons to live and people who love you.

Greenbean I’m a vet as well and I have to side with you on this one.
I feel for my brothers fighting PTSD. I know some lose the battle and I hate it both for them and their families.
That said I have never believed that stat and don’t believe the real numbers are even close to that.
Looking at it objectively that would mean, for example, that over 130,000 vets have committed suicide since roughly 2002. (Using 9/11 time frame as a starting point for the stat.)
I have been around the military all my life. Raised an Army brat, served in the AF, worked in defense since then. In all that time I have known three military guys who took their lives and two of those were over divorce/marital issues/child custody. The other was an overly inebriated guy who didn’t want to go to his next assignment (or so I heard).
So while I know things seen/done in the Iraq/Stan theater has been the reason for many of these vets deciding to check out, I don’t believe for a second the number always purported it to be (22/day) was true.
Twenty-two a month, throughout the entire US...maybe.

I have personally known four friends who ended their lives. 3 men who were millionaires and “had it all”. My former girlfriend committed suicide six months ago. She was a very caring woman but a divorce , bankruptcy and numerous health issues sent her over the edge. She was just 47 years old
Damn man. That's rough shite. I feel for you.

The suicide rates of veterans is staggering. Wish we took better care of vets in this country.
Agree but it’s not just vets. AD is bad as well. AF just had a complete stop because suicide is becoming an epidemic.

Hate to bring politics into this, but I like Andrew Yang's idea of a post service "boot camp". Includes mental evaluations and help getting adjusted to civilian life

I don't think that would be helpful. I know during my outprocessing I paid attention to less than 1/2 of the crap said. If it was some forced "boot camp" that number would drop.
What we need to do is back up the "concern" with action. That is not happening now.

That’s terrible story, poor woman will never be able to get that out of her head.

I don't know how veterans of WWII were treated. All I have ever seen as they have been publicly treated with complete and utter respect. I don't know how they have been treated when the camera's are off. I do know how vets have been treated ever since. And it's been complete disdain. I don't see that ever changing or improved.

It is shite like this that needs to stop. I think I understand where the commander is coming from, but someone who is suicidal doesn't need publicly shamed:
