Per the Reveille

quote:

University student Benjamin Balser died over the weekend, according to LSU Media Relations Director Ernie Ballard.

The death occurred off campus. BRPD responded to the call. The East Baton Rouge Coroner's Office said the autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

This story will be updated as more details become available.

WBRZ has a little more info.

quote:

BATON ROUGE – The coroner is investigating the cause of death of an LSU student who died at an off-campus apartment, WBRZ learned Monday.

Benjamin Balser was found in an apartment on E. Boyd recently. LSU confirmed Balser was a student and had previously been a member of a fraternity.

“We do not know at this time what the cause of death is as there was no apparent cause observed at the scene,” the coroner's office said in a statement to WBRZ.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

The death investigation comes weeks after the on-campus death of Max Gruver. Gruver died, authorities suspect, after drinking too much while being hazed at his fraternity house. Ten fraternity members were booked into jail in connection with his death last week.

There is no connection between Gruver's death and the death of Balser.

Searched, SIAP.

Saw this earlier. If he drank too much tailgating the University will say its unfortunate, but nothing else. The hypocrisy of what is about to happen is what really pisses me off.

I say this while realizing that what has happened to two young people is extremely unfortunate and sad.

I've known some hard core drinkers so it's hard for me to believe these kids are dying from drinking alone.

Probably so shocked at the win that he had a heart attack

Prayers and thoughts for the family of course. Too much death these days.

Yeah but there is a difference in a bona fide alcoholic and an 18 year old who knocks back 12 shots of 190 proof over a couple of hours.

I do get your point though.

This is such a weird statement... and why the frick is the University giving more information on the student than just confirming they were a student?

ETA: I also don't need to know that every student death at LSU over the next couple years isn't related to Max Gruver.

You probably don't need to. But go read LSU or WAFB's Facebook page and see the number of people who will try to make a connection between the two deaths.

This.

It's shots. ALWAYS shots. Always.

I don't think it is possible to drink enough beer to die. You will vomit first. Your stomach would have a hard time holding the amount of alcohol needed in the form of beer.

I always tell people when I see them that shots are so fricking stupid. Unless you have one that you really enjoy. Herradura Silver out of the freezer for me with a lime. Then it's just one. Shots are just a good way to ruin a good time. If not only for the fear of death, young men need to Ben told the dangers of Whiskey Dick.

We don't educate kids on the dangers of alcohol until it's too late. It's a cultural thing. MADD wanted the law changed to 21 so we just don't teach kids anything about booze until they get an education from fellow ignorant peers.

Big difference between someone who has been drinking for years and a kid fresh out of highschool with no tolerance.
