An evening at the governor’s mansion

Holiday from LA mansion (watching this tonight from PBS).
Why are the people in audience so stiff and lifeless? This is Louisiana for soulful sake.
Is this the result of money, power and smallness clique mindset?

It was outdoors in a tent, so it was probably cold
They are stodgy big money donors and most of them are middle aged or above. It was past most of their bedtimes. Once they went through the reception line and had their presence noted, they were ready to go home.
