So what part of North LA you from?

Told the ex wife she had 20 minutes to "pay her respects" and leave. Advise the daughters they were welcomed for as long as they wanted.

The people around here have trouble reading more than a few sentences so I doubt many people read this, but I would have stayed out of it. That's between them, however; his daughters should have been there and someone had to take them there..
And no matter what, the ex-wife still deserves the right to pay her respects. The gf might not like it, but that's life.

I wouldn’t have done a thing. Sounds like the GF handled it perfectly. In my eyes, the lowest of the low are gold-diggers.

GF was wrong and unclassy. The Ex was just paying respects. And the daughters were there too. No time to be a bitch. The time for that is afterwards at the wake when the Ex is no longer around and everyone is liquored up.
However...
He died of cancer, so it was obviously known that this day was coming sooner than later. He may very well have told his GF all along that under no circumstances should his wife be at his funeral, and she was just fulfilling his request. If that's the case, I'm good with what she did, though she could have obviously done it a little better, having the Funeral Director come out and take care of it instead of her causing the scene.

Girlfriend is a bitch.
Because of her, your friend's own daughters did not feel welcome at his funeral.
She should have set aside her pettiness and allowed the ex and daughters to pay their respects.

He could have done that himself and made it clear to his daughters, as well, in effort to avoid confrontations at the funeral home.
My uncles ex of a gazillion years showed up at his funeral. It was a tumultuous divorce with lots of nasty facets. The current wife certainly wasn't very happy about the ex showing up. The ex arrived with one of the adult children. The current wife was seething, but she held her head up and maintained complete dignity and composure. This wasn't about the ex or anyone else. It was about celebrating my uncle's life and grieving for his loss with everyone else in attendance and she was also not about to upset any of his children. He'd had tenuous relationships with them at times for reasons similar to those in the OP.

My dad had explicit directions that none of his ex-wives were to attend his funeral, which included my mom. I respected his wish.

Did I miss the awkwardness? This sounds like typical OT people behavior. We all fight at funerals.

If the ex-wife was as shitty of a person as you believe, she should not have come. The fact that the daughters also left is pretty bad, they are old enough to make their own choices.
The GF probably did what she thought was right.

Tell that count of an ex to get to steppin' unless she wants there to be two funerals today. Worldstar!

I saw a near fist fight at a funeral for my Uncle. It was actually very embarrassing and it was totally because of a long term misunderstanding.

Let them handle it. Not your business.
