Texas is usually mid-30s when ranked by percentage of workforce with 4 year degrees, for example

Seems like a dumb way to evaluate or rank the current state of the educational system...

We got a lot of construction workers and oil jobs and messicans who don’t have or need a bachelors. Of course we have a higher than average % of people without college degrees. But what would that have to do with public schools and the UT system, for example?

Even the “low costs” thing is not true after the flood. Real estate is insane right now.

Compared to a lot of other places, it's really not though. People from all over the country laugh when they hear the prices in NOLA and are like wow that's cheap.

I love Louisiana and I always will, but I'm also lucky enough to work in an industry that is relatively unaffected by these metrics. As much as I love it, damn this State is a train wreck. I understand people like me who are born here and love it, but I don't see a compelling reason for attracting young, bright workers and families here.

There's a reason why so many of my friends over the years have relocated to TX, and I'm concerned LA is never going to get its act together.

I would put the nice suburban school districts in Houston/DFW/Austin up against almost anywhere though

In the Kingwood area, they are teaching software development in middle school iirc. We don't have kids yet, but I was blown away by the schools in the area.... and I graduated from one of the best High Schools in Louisiana (which isn't saying much I guess).

Yes it is.

NOLA is pretty high. Baton Rouge is about average (although it should be below average for what you get as far as the city), and every thing else is dirt cheap.

They have Texas as middle of the pack in quality of life, which actually seems generous
