Moved here from New Orleans earlier this year.
Austin is no New Orleans when it comes to character, but let's face it, there's maybe 3 to 5 places in America that can maybe compete. And I miss that a lot.
Job market puts the state of LA to shame. It would have been a lot harder to change jobs back in NO.
Can put your kids in public school, but pay high property taxes, but if you have 2 kids it evens out or you are way ahead.
I brought up the crime page on the Austin Statesman and Nola.com earlier today. It's laughable considering how big Austin is. Near a million in city limit's and 35 murders a year. New Orleans would be utopia if it had that. It actually weirds me out how safe it is.

No state income tax in TX either.

A lot of the traffic problems in Baton Rouge are caused by the merger of two major interstates in a city that was never intended to handle that kind of volume. And lack of a grid system. And lack of a loop.
Come to think of it, Baton Rouge wasn't designed to handle traffic at all.

If you don't mind me asking, what part of Austin/suburbs did you move into? How did you find it price-wise in comparison with BR suburbs?

It's great for young professionals, like my wife and I who started working with basically nothing. It helps us save money we otherwise couldn't afford to that we will one day use to buy a house and pay the state back in property tax. It's a great idea.

I can agree with that. New Orleans is bipolar on that front from don't give a shite to getting "baby" which I love. It weirded me out how nice servers were here.
Also, I think you said you work from home. I swear everyone I meet works from home, so how the frick is there traffic?

Don't mind.
I moved from near Children's Hospital in Uptown New Orleans. We are renting in South Austin right off Congress. We have a house under contract in Northwest Hills.
No kids yet, still debating that.
Cost is definitely higher, but there is some offsetting due to taxes, public schools. We're pretty fortunate and we moved here due to a big raise so it's hard for me to compare.

The giant river really fricks things up. The Colorado is a creek in comparison.
It's a huge fiscal and mental barrier. People don't like to cross rivers. Look at St. louis, Westbank, etc.

Haven't moved in yet but I've always lived on flat land so this was appealing. We're off Far West.
Works out because my work is north so it will take 15 minutes each way. Wife doesn't do rush hour hours so her trip downtown shoukd be roughly the same we think.
